It's a meme. DRPGs are a dead genre no one cares about. Even if this was the best DRPG in history, that wouldn't be enough reason for anyone to give a shit.

The game is apparently on hold because it slows down a bit if it is played off a hard drive that has doublespace installed on it.

Cleve is considering making the whole thing playable directly from floppy discs to avoid the doublespace hard drive issue, which still might be used on some older drives.

Also the game is not playable on a Win3.1 machines. A fix might happen for that before the game launches proper.

It's sort of a remake. It's by the same developers and covers the story of the first two Xth games, but is fairly different as an actual game. This game is not shovelware. It's not a casual game. It's not trying to appeal to a wider audience to make more money by dumbing down to lowest common denominator. Coming from a society that has dumbed down everything to cater to them since the day they were born, many newbs will wonder what the fuss is all about. Grimoire is for elite connoisseurs of computer roleplaying games with very refined tastes. If you don't think a game like Grimoire is worth $1000, much less $40 then you probably are not a fan of these kinds of games. You are welcome to look on the Steam store, on GOG, on Humble Bundle or anywhere on the internet to find a similar game. You won't find it because it doesn't exist. Even the Wizardry titles are just pale shadows of Grimoire now, they are forerunners but Grimoire gets it all right. Grimoire is the gold standard for these sorts of games. People who believe this was going to be just another blobber will discover they were sorely mistaken. Grimoire is the first and possibly last game of this calibre, at least until Grimoire II arrives.

P.S. After what is likely an opening discount, Grimoire will never be discounted or put on sale ever again. You will never see Grimoire sold for $15 but in 8 years you might see it down to $20. In the meantime, I guess you won't be playing this game if you're not respectful enough to pay what it is worth as product. I am amazed at the shovelware people pay $50 for without thinking but believe because Grimoire has an old fashioned aesthetic it must be worth less that those titles. Neanderthals have an older aesthetic too ... 300 pounds of muscle, six foot tall with an 1800 cc brain and the ability to see in the dark. I don't know that this implies they were inferior to modern people.

It is quite good. Chocolate Knight and the Harpy from the same castle are basically the casual filters, and appear around the time when you can get your first evolved classes. Game really picks up after that.

The game doesn't properly start until the end of the story and then the postgame where the dungeons dramatically increase both in length and complexity, everything until then is more meant to teach you the basic mechanics and how to handle different situations, you won't really get thrown off the deep end for a while.

Also, all those 0s in steps 3 and 4 are your spells, which are sorted by tier, even though most characters can only learn one type of spells and no one can learn all of them. The 0 refers to how many casts you have of that spell group, and you select one of the numbers to view the spells available in that group.
Operation Abyss could be used for generations to come as an example of how not to design menus.

The "tutorial period" being 10h long doesn't mean the game sucks for all of that, anon. It's not like they straight up infodump everything you need to know onto you. For example at some point very early on it gets mentioned that crits can stop casts, then a few dungeons later you come across a boss that will one shot your entire party with its AoE spells, so obviously you need to interrupt them. Tutorial period means stuff like that, simple bosses that teach you basic mechanics, something every good game does.
