Both of these games are designed around the speed/momentum of the character

Sonic is not
The more Sonic speeds up, the harder it is to anticipate what's coming up in the level

Nobody runs a Sonic level for the first time without getting fucked over by an obstacle or enemy they couldn't react to.
You have to do the level multiple times, especially given how large some of them are, before you can do them competently.

Sonic has literally both these problems at the same time, and left aligning the character fixes both of them. The reason sonic is "hold right to win" is because you can't fucking do anything but hold right when you start moving, all the extra paths and jumps come by so fast that you can't react to them so all people do is hold right to win. After world 3, all those extra paths require you to stop and go through special jumps to get to, and the default path starts to have some basic obstacles that become impossible to react to because you are moving at the speed of BLAST PROCESSING.

Sonic ALLOWS you to go fast. If you go fast beyond your capacity to handle fast, you are really to blame.

You won't find many things like speed pads inches from a wall of spikes or anything. Every time your speed is out of your hands they get considerably more accommodating and lay out some terrain designed for the purpose.

Lest we ever bring up that you only really ever go "too fast to react" when fucking rolling. I'm not saying Sonic doesn't have gotcha moments that encourage being more cautious your first time or spending rings while playing recklessly but I 100% argue that that sort of game design is fucking fine. Well then its a good thing Sonic games don't actually do that. If you actually pay attention to the level design, you're never expected to dodge enemies in any areas where you're also expected to go fast. 99.9% of the time enemies are only in parts of the level where you're already platforming or otherwise being mindful of what's in front of you.
Sonic 2 is the ONLY game that even remotely throws enemies at you in unfair places, and even then, I can only count 3 levels do it excessively.
This whole meme that Sonic requires memorization to avoid obstacles is fucking retarded.
