Any specific eras? Are we including mods/expansions?

My essentials would be:
Doom 1/2
Blood/Shadow Warrior
Half-Life

Timesplitters trilogy is way up there, if only for sheer variety.
>>
The Darkness is some good shit.

Shame its 360/PS3 only.
>>
Bulletstorm if you can stomach the awful writing. Had a lot of fun gunning for high scores and getting all the skill kills.

No specific eras, and please include mods and expansions. Half life 1 and 2 mods especially.

I'll be honest, playing through Farcry: Blood Dragon without even playing any Farcry I enjoyed the fucking heck out of it.

If you don't like the game already by the look of it, fair. Don't play it if that's the case. If you love the 80s and thought Kung Fury was funny, you'll probably love this.

>>386095004
It's pretty great. I personally like 3 and 4 a lot; 3 had a dramatically more potent story, but 4 had significantly improved gameplay flow. The ability to slap C4 on a jeep, cut the brakes, and roll it into a camp for maximum destruction, then whistle bait into the camp to call a bear to maul stragglers is a damn near perfect gameplay experience.

No, fuck off. Those games have insane level design, enemy design, and weapon design. It's really easy to demonstrate how varied and interesting those games can be if you look at each facet from a pure gameplay perspective. If you cannot appreciate those games, the only logical conclusion is that you think they're too old. I still play these games regularly because they're that good.

Honestly, the early CoD campaigns were pretty fun rail shooters
>>
>>386096950
They all are. Some people just jump on the hate wagon without knowing that the hate was about the multiplayer.
>>
>>386096950
I still don't get why CoD's campaigns are so on rails. I haven't sat down and played much CoD except to occasionally play some zombies with a couple of my housemates but the level designs for those actually feel somewhat nonlinear and creative. Hell, I'd probably drop money on a CoD game if they'd make one with a campaign that revolved more around the zombie levels' design.

Quake 1 is great, the enemy variety really adds a lot of different challenges based on their placement, timing, and pairings. Most of the guns are useful, though I don't like that the regular nailgun is completely overshadowed when you get the SNG.

The base game is good enough, but if you pick up the Quake Injector from Quaddicted, you will never want for singleplayer maps. On top of that, people have done some amazing things with the engine, and modding the game is pretty easy.

Quake 2 is pretty good too, I know anons hate that it wasn't similar to Quake 1, but honestly, I can't think of any way they could've improved Quake 1 from what it was and kept the same universe. Q2/Q4 are both enjoyable games.

Heretic + Hexen
Shadow Warrior
Duke Nukem 3D
Quake series
Serious Sam
Half-Life 1 and 2 + Expansions
Star Wars: Jedi Knight series
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
System Shock 2
Deus Ex and Human Revolution
Halo games up until Reach
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
FEAR
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Bioshock
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Doom 2016

I know I included several that could be considered more of a FPS RPGs then anything else, but eh.

>FEAR

Half Life 2 is not optional, it's just overrated shit. Basically an OMG DA FIZZIKZ simulator, implying that shit would be impressive forever with the shitty gimmicky puzzles. the vehicle segments were also overdrawn and straight AIDS, not to mention the unskippable in-game cinematic horse shit (HL1 is guilty of that shit too)

>>
>>386098459
> Shit

I thought it was an improvement compared to Hexen, mainly because it actually gives you a sense of where to go in the form of hints throughout the game as well as a general idea of what you needed to do at the beginning of each hub. With Hexen you were usually just hunting through the levels trying to find that fucking switch or key to access another switch or key in god knows which other part of the hub. The different characters felt more unique as well.
>>
>>386098279
>though I don't like that the regular nailgun is completely overshadowed when you get the SNG.
i don't see the problem with this. it's just to scale difficulty and weapon balance differently between the levels as you progress desu.
>>

i didnt find the level design compelling, the story is a complete fucking mess and i hate infinitely respawning enemies

He's talking about Heretic II the third person game, not Hexen. It's kind of confusing I know since Hexen is the direct sequel to Heretic.

I hope in the future, id makes a Quake game that encompasses all of the games into a single player campaign. Like, you're fighting the Strogg in one world and you realize that they're fighting against another enemy. When you jump to the dimension, it's the hub world from Quake 1 remastered and remade that's all rusty and old but still has working teleporters. Then you get to fight all the old enemies from Quake 1 all HD and shit.

Blood has too damn many hitscan enemies, if it wasnt for that itd be much better

>No, fuck off. Those games have insane level design, enemy design, and weapon design.

i played a good deal of Blood and Doom 1, the main problem with Blood is the excessive amount of hitscan enemies, atleast in the first chapter, those are hardly entertaining to fight

Doom 1 has a decent campaign, but the weapon selection is very generic (being one of the first FPS this is understandable) and the level design while imaginative can be very tedious, looking around those giantic maps for those stupid keys is really no fun after youve killed all the enemies and theres nothing left to shoot

compare this to Quake, Quake is how FPS level design should be, the levels are just as big as Doom's but condensed into a smaller area, thanks to verticality which was possible with the new engine

the game also has these subtle hits to guide you into the correct path, for instance, the best way to know you are on track is to check how high you are, often the higher the path you walk on is, the closer you are to the exist, this also makes backtracking a complete breeze since you only have to jump down to a lower path, likewise with some rocket jumping you can finish levels in record time, finally while key hunting is still present its less prevalent than in Doom

They could have made Ana a friend of his in the first level, had almost the same dialogue and passed it off as banter between squaddies, but instead it had to be some tsundere 'oh thank you for s-saving my life Artyom chan, now put your dark one in my botanical garden' bullshit
>>
>>386100104
>Blood has too damn many hitscan enemies
The only hitscan enemies I remember are the cultists which really weren't that bad. Kind of a nuisance early on when you were low on equipment but pretty easy once you started accumulating a decent amount of shotgun and tommy gun ammo or at least got the hang of using dynamite. The pig cops in Duke Nukem were a lot worse if you ask me.
>>
>>386100013
My nigga, I almost forgot about Dark Watch. I remember it being kind of a generic Halo clone for the most part but I still had a good amount of fun with it
>>
>>386099191
I always think of it in the context of a shorter level set. Whereas when you find the SSG, you still have use for it and the normal SG throughout the level, the SG just becomes a wasted spot in your inventory after acquiring the SNG. It doesn't have any other interesting qualities like damage to ammo efficiency or anything like that.

There's nothing actually wrong with it, it just sort of feels left out compared to everything else. I suppose one of the things it does ok is you can give the player the NG early on in a level set, and then hide SNGs behind difficult secrets, and you never run into the problem that a player is searching for a weapon to use the ammo with, he's just not getting the full effect out of it.

I wish id / Bethesda would do a new Quake game in the same vein as they did Wolfenstein and Doom.

Unfortunately, if they did, it would be more Strogg shit like 2 and 4, and nothing like 1. Would love to have some more old-world shit with magical runes and monsters.
>>
>>386102639
They should have a combination of both, since that's basically what the Quake universe is centered around: dimensions and stuff.
>>
>>386102639

I wouldn't hold your breath - Quake Champions seems to give me the impression of their intentions with the Quake franchise, which is to just center it around what it became most popular for - it's online arena counterparts.

I'd love for a Quake SP game as well though. Some of the maps from Champions definitely shows they have a lot of appreciation for the elder world shit from 1.
