They hand you a systems driven game with 10000 interactive elements, then every time a good build is discovered, they nerf it. Sometimes they nerfed builds within 24 hours of going public. Even the 'allowed' meta builds get routinely nerfed to keep the metagame turning over instead of giving players reasons to use other builds.

Someone comes up with a way to slow monsters by 100% using insanely expensive components? Nerfed into the ground. Mirror arrow clones that self destruct for good damage due to minion instability? Btfo. Frost walls + kinetic blast? They tore that build apart piece by piece in patch after patch until nothing remained

Now look at Diablo 2. How many rebalancings did the developers do after patch 1.10? The only nerf they did in a decade of leaving hte game untouched was to make blessed hammer no longer pierce magic immune undead in PvM. And that was it. And it only affected baal wave #2, and had no impact on PvP. They gave minor buffs to other builds but didn't nerf anything else

GGG couldn't balance well because its a linear PvM grinding game that lacks the self-balancing aspect of builds with different strengths/weaknesses interacting. D2 would be a broken game if all anyone played was PvM, because there's no reason to play anything but a hammerdin, javazon or light sorc. But in dueling theres like 30+ viable builds

I used to play (in like, january of 2013) a game called warframe.

Ember had an ability that raised her armor so she could get in closer to do more dps (she was supposed to be a fire-based magic caster class) - some players figured out that the armor boost on the ignite spell was actually really really good, better than the actual 'tank' if you stack armor mods and such, so...

the "supposed to be dps" caster became the best tank in the game (shield tanking was not viable yet, and several other tank classes hadn't been released yet).

So me, being the player I am, feel that his unique and clever way of using game mechanics should be rewarded.

But the devs say, that's not what we intended, so we're gonna change that and remove that and make sure you aren't able to do that because she's supposed to be a dps class (ironically, she has no damage, and no utility, even after her rework, and now she cant' tank either, so totally useless).

In GGG's case, there are builds they keep nerfing constantly that still manage to survive (vaal spark for example (though this most recent nerf might finally kill it, idk)) and then there are cool unique things that are, well, TOO good (like poison / chaos damage exploitation) and in order to keep the game within the pace that they expect, they have to tone down some stuff when it comes to best in slot possibilities, because otherwise the game is just completely broken (should you REALLY be able to slow a monster 100%)

d2 is also a bad example to use for balance because duel has its own bullshit rules that people invented because of how naturally imbalanced it is, and pve in the game raelly has no endgame content or anythng designed for people above level, like 80 or so (yes i know they added ubers after i stopped playing, but even that isnt really enough, its nothing like labryinth or maps, or even adventure mode / grifts

I play often and the gift of the mechanics is that it doesn't have to be a shooty game. You can join a logistics group as a literal scrap farmer tending to your cotton fields, or as a disgusting pissjug trucker, or other jobs depending on what needs to be done. You can be bob the builder and fuck up roadways, who cares.
However the players on teams need to have communication otherwise shit ain't getting done. Which is bad because modern PC gamer majority players are fucking shits. We are obviously not shits, so we could probably set up a private /v/ or /vg/ server and have good times.
