I'm playing through the game for the first time, I'm about two thirds through I think and I'm a bit confused. Early in the game, when Doom guy needs to remove three filters of the Argent tower, why does he destroy them instead of simply removing them? He comes across a manchild with enormous retard rage but no intelligence. By destroying the ability to harvest Argent energy, Earth has no other viable alternatives. Even Dr Hayden admits that Olivia went too far but we need to harvest energy from Hell, it's our only option. I don't feel like a hero in D44M, I feel like a baby who likes to break stuff.

Doom 1:
Doomguy is part of a UAC Marine team assigned to Phobos, guarding the research station. One day everything goes to shit. While Doomguy was stuck in Hell, the demons were invading Earth. They killed his pet bunny just to spite him. Doomguy goes berserk and slaughters them all, plunging back into Hell to finish the Icon of Sin which is summoning the invasion force.

Doom 64: Another day, another demon outbreak. Doomguy's the man for the job, so the UAC sends him, but he's at the end of his rope and slowly going nuts. He steals the demon weapon, the Unmaker, and powering it with the three hell keys he destroys the demon queen and ends the threat yet again, but he's too far gone mentally to return to Earth. He remains in hell, slaughtering demons for as long as he can.

Doom 4: After a really long time of slaughtering demons, making some allies and getting sweet armor, the forces of hell finally managed to trick him into stepping into a monster closet and sealed the door on him. Eventually another universe's UAC finds his coffin and releases him, but this spooks the cultists involved in the UAC and they fast track the planned demonic invasion. Doomguy wakes up, mega pissed, and begins to rip and tear afresh. Though successful, the mastermind of the operation to exploit Hell as an energy source escapes, and dumps Doomguy in the middle of nowhere. That's where we are now.

It's funny because the first AIs in science-fiction, the ones from Isaac Asimov's books, were never insane or even explicitly malicious. All of them were pleasant, eager, and in some cases quite friendly. Conflict only arose when unusual situations caused their Laws (the Three Laws of Robotics) to get mixed up, like the robot on Mercury that was going in circles because it had to cross a stretch of land that would kill it (Third Law) but it had orders to fix the solar panels in said stretch of land (Second Law.)

Also, MULTIVAC is one of the most fun characters in Asimov's books, second only to R. Daneel Olivaw (another robot) who features prominently in the Spacer series.
