Your thumbs, or at least most people's, naturally rest near the index fingers. There's a tiny bit of strain keeping your thumbs rested on the bottom portion of the controller.

The asymmetric design is ergonomic for most games. Symmetric is most often shit.

And if you play shooters, it should be a keyboard and mouse anyway.

experiences vary. i owned one and it lasted about a month. the shoulder buttons got stuck and soon the left analog stick just stopped working. i opened it up and saw the worst soldering job i've ever seen. i re-did the soldering myself. fixed the stuck L and R shoulder buttons but analog was just dead. i never returned it it still sits in it's case collecting dust. i have a friend that bought one and he has no problems with it even after 10 months he claims, so who knows. all i know is that they're made in hong kong so let that sink in for a while before you buy.

one, it has an analog stick when it should have a d-pad
the controller was originally designed without one, and it should have kept the analog stick away
using a stick as a d-pad is just awful

two, the software is just so bad
everything is slider based, you have to go through steam big picture mode to set anything, and the changed settings often do not commit, resetting to previous config
it is also hardly functional without steam, requiring third party solutions when you can't get steam big pictures to work with a game
yes it's labelled "steam controller", so interacting with steam makes sense, but it's also a pc controller, and pc represents freedom of choice when it comes to controls, which steam controller stifles

It can't totally replace a keyboard or controller. But for a shitload of games pic related is a superior method of control.

I just need to nail down what controller I want to use a backup for dpads and hopefully sticks as well. I've tried the WiiU pro with a mayflash adapter but the camera stick and dpad don't get recognized by like half my games and I can't find ANYTHING about the problem online.

Okay, but consider this, retard:
Most games use one of two major control setups. They'll have LS for movement and RS for camera (with the primary important functions on the shoulder buttons) or use D-Pad for movement and the buttons for most else. With most games using this sort of setup, the vast majority of games will be putting strain on at least one thumb. Of course, there are plenty of action games which require the use of LS and the buttons together, but in that case you still only have one thumb receiving the majority of the strain with a symmetrical layout. Not to mention that, should you not like the Playstation method of having the sticks be lower, Wii U's setup had the opposite: Sticks on the top with the D-Pad and buttons on the buttom. Symmetrical layouts are objectively superior for the majority of games.

And aside from all that, the majority of strain will always be from the actual shape of the controller rather than slight differences in the layout, anyways. If you're genuinely playing a game long enough that holding a controller is painful, no matter the layout, it's time to take a fucking break.

if you're happy with the DS3 then i would just keep with that. it's easier to naturally hit diagonals on my DS3 compared to my xbone controller. i'd recommend a DS4, which i mainly use now, if you wanted a more modern controller but still want to not kill yourself playing fighters. it's also very solid for other genres, and nice to take advantage of the touchpad on the computer.

No, it doesn't work like that. Wii and Wii U was a special case.

1. Wii's standard controller was the remote, it's pro function was the nunchuck combo, and the classic controller was made primarily with CLASSIC games in mind, so of course the sticks are going to be below the regular layout. Devs also pushed for GCN controller with anything requiring a standard modern controller configuration, all the way down to in-game UI.

2. Wii U had its primary controller with a touch screen, which required it to be symmetrical to be useable for all. This meant twin sticks on top, Screen less extra pro controller kept this configuration for parity.

Use a PS4 controller instead. Or get one with paddles

+ Way better joystick and dpad, soft touch finish more comfortable than Xbox 360. Better triggers. I still prefer this over the DS4, but I use the DS4 from time to time.
- bluetooth is nice but iffy at best, not good if you have to use multiple controllers. Dongle needed if you need multi controllers. Something about the grip makes me prefer the 360 more for longer sessions

There are no such things as Xbox One Controllers with a wire built in, official ones anyways. Here's a breakdown, I might copy pasta a bit, but info still stands.

This is Type 1. Skip this. You can tell it is Type One because of the hard to press bumpers, no headphone jack, and this green packaging.

Type 2 came in near identical packaging, has better shoulders, and an audio jack. It also has near identical green packaging.

Both type 1 and type 2 are called "Xbox One Wireless Controller"

Yep, that's the one you want. they come in lots of cool colors, you can make your own too. All the custom ones at the design lab are type 3. Some Type 3s from the design lab, and some special editions, even feature rubberized grips if you want them, but the textured plastic finish is preferred by many.

If you're like me and have your pc connected to a tv for comfy couch times, xbone pad+chatpad attachment is a godsend. Use xpadder or some other software to map mouse mivement/keys to the buttons, I have mine set so that if I press start+select it disables all the controller macros for game time

Both my Xbone controller and my ps4 controller have the same fucking problem and its fucking infuriating. The usb cable doesn't actually fit in, it doesn't "click" when you put it in,its just kinda wiggly inside of it, meaning if I move my hands too much the controller outright disconnects and has a seizure. And BOTH controllers have this shit now. Its infuriating because both controllers are perfectly fine except for this one trivial issue that makes both of them worthless now. Honestly, it depends on the size of your hand. People with wider palms are going to hate the PS4 controller. People with thinner hands will prefer the PS4 controller. As someone with wide hands, the Xbox controller is really my only option which, desu, is frustrating because I like the shoulder buttons on the PS4 more.
