Anyone else played this gem of a dungeon crawler? Picked it up on a whim, and also because I still get all misty eyed when I think about my days playing Eye of the Beholder back on my trusty old Amiga.
So what are your opinions folks? Is the game a little too old school, or is it a great RPG?
>>
>>386060652
I had the first one. Which I thought was the beez neaz,.
>>
Shitty Grimoire ripoff.
>>
>>386060926
Haven't played the first one, but once i finish with the second I will be.
>>
>>386061170
I only played a few hours of 2. But 1 I got pretty far in. Give it a shot
>>
Severely underrated because everybody blew their load on the first one and never played the second. It's a real shame it didn't sell nearly as well.
>>
>>386060652
It would be 10 times better if 90% of the time the combat wasn't just dancing circles around the enemies.
>>
>>386062590
Yeah but there is strategy involved. Some of the tougher enemies require some thought, as well as nimble fingers on the WASD keys. I'm loving how interconnected the game world is and the puzzles are great as well. Game's quite hard too.
I can see how others might not like it but for me, who adored dungeon crawlers back in the day, the game is a blast.
>>
>>386060652
played it till I was sick of it, wish I could take 5 members though, i'm always leaving out a fight/rogue/alchemist.
>>
>>386060652
>Is the game a little too old school, or is it a great RPG?
Almost every great RPG is old school.
>>
>>386060652
I thought that it was open world on an island rather then a dungeon crawl so I never picked it up, if it has an underground crawl then I might grab it.
>>
>>386062590
Grimrock 2 avoided this to a large extent, though environments that don't allow that, enemies that dodge around in different ways, etc. There's still some of it, but it's no just the endless square dance on every enemy like the first game.
>>
>>386064946
It's a mixture of both, but "open world" isn't really accurate, more just branching paths between some open-ish above ground dungeons.
>>
>>386064946
It's a combination of both and the way in which open environments are integrated with the more traditional dungeon areas is the highlight of the game for me.
>>
>>386064556
Yeah. I am playing with a barbarian minotaur, a human knight, an Insectoid wizard and an Insectoid battle mage. Seems to be an effective party thus far.
>>
>>386061170
The second one is objectively inferior to the first.
It's one of those games where they're basically the same game except the sequel improved on everything.

>>386065864
The second one is objectively SUPERIOR to the first, fuck.

>>386064946
It's not any more an open world than the first one. The outside areas are still "rooms" entirely surrounded with walls/rocks/trees and divided by doors.
>>
>>386066004
>It's not any more an open world than the first one. The outside areas are still "rooms" entirely surrounded with walls/rocks/trees and divided by doors.
This is true, but moving about in the forest, as restricted and closed off as it is, is still a nice touch.
>>
Reminder that Grimrock 3 will never happen.
>>
>>386066280
Yeah what has the developer been doing? This shit came out like 4 years ago.

The broke up and reformed into a smaller dev team and are now making a top down turn based rpg where you play as a single character in a randomly generated world. It's called Druidstone.

Apparently they're designing levels properly but have them connected in somewhat random order.
Think Binding of Isaac or FTL.

hmmm. I'm really not a fan of randomization in video games. Gonna keep an open mind and wait for the reviews.

Started playing it again the other day after all the Grimoire memeing. It's always bothered me how I never finished it, because god damn Grimrock 2 is so fucking good.

It's such a shame so few people have played it, it's really great.
>>
>>386069565
Could it be that is because it is such a sprawling and at times merciless adventure some of the newer generation of gamers, raised on a diet of Bioware RPG's, find the game too difficult?

>>386066004
>>386065864
Admittedly the first one's atmosphere was a bit better than the second. Also, the adventure in 1, being pure dungeon crawling, was 'tighter' in a lot of ways. less need to explore on a greater scale than clearing out a floor at a time, making the whole thing less daunting and easier to play though.

The second is definitely better but it's not so ridiculously cut and dry.
>>
>>386069893
I don't think it's merciless, it's just that the puzzles are actually hard.

What a retarded post

LOG2 is just the same game as the first - a rehash. That's why nobodies played it. Thankfully times have changed and doing Wizardry rehashes wouldn't fly today.
>>
>>386066403

>It's been 4 years already

Grimrock 1 and 2 were great. I actually didn't play any of the old school first person RPGs, but the customization, the puzzle solving, the hidden areas all make for excellent games. I'll make another pass at 2 someday.
>>
>>386060652
Why are people saying the second one sold a lot worse?
What makes them say that, I thought they both sold alright?
>>386069893
You fit in, stop trying now
>>
>>386069893
It's not that hard, dude. The exploration is kinda daunting and some of the puzzles are generally hard, but really it's like 99% to do with the time it was released compared to the first. The first was definitely released in that golden age of steam indies, where there were just enough to get people interested to look for stuff, but the market was still relatively dry. Lots of games around that era that were only okay did really well, and Grimrock was better than just okay. Meanwhile Grimrock 2 released in the era of full indie saturation. nobody who wasn't specifically interested in it already was going to wind up picking it up and playing it. The lack of Grimrock 2 winding up in humble bundles (again, back when they were popular) and the like probably didn't help either.
>>
>>386070117
>The second is definitely better but it's not so ridiculously cut and dry.

It's not better - I spent all that time to escape that lonely dungeon, and then the sequel is you on a lonely island. Lame

Pic related.
Steamspy isn't completely accurate, but it can be used for a general idea. Also, it rarely got discussed anywhere, and the publisher upsized and built a massively bigger game after the first, yet disbanded after the second.
>>
>>386070546
How is it lame?

I'm sorry you guys like the Gone Home version of an RPG because the european cucks that made LOG2 were too cheap to make NPCs that you could talk to.

The Quest is what LOG2 should have been.

>>

>>

"Token NPCs"

What about "token party members"?
>>
>>386071127
How is it not?
>more characters
>more classes
>more, bigger rooms
>more varied environments

It's the same game as the first except bigger and better.

Just ignore him. It's one guy, he does this every time Grimrock 2 is brought up.
>>
>>386071260
Taking the same formula and refining it with more content is pretty much a perfect sequel. If you liked the first there's no reason not to like the second.

And you do have a party?
>>
>>386071398
Ever played an RPG with party members you can recruit? They might be too old for you as you've been tricked by Grimrocks good graphics to think it's an in depth RPG

>>386071295
>>more characters
>>more enemies

Same thing because Grimrock 2 has no characters.

>more classes
>more, bigger rooms
>more varied environments
>more interactions
>more complex puzzles

Yet you're still doing the same thing - uncovering a badly told narrative akin to Gone Home.
>>
>>386071543
Ok, but did you actually like the first game?
>>
>>386071693
I love LOG1 - even made a campaign for it - it's obviously low budget, but the devs use that to its storytelling advantage

LOG2 is a cheap ass sequel - you don't get to see the universe you were promised you could see at the end of the first game
>>
>>386060652

Played this in highs and loved it. Even became a moderator on the official forums. Still have ever yet to play the sequel despite owning it. I want to but I have to be in the mood to play this sorta game.
>>
>>386071981
>the universe you were promised you could see at the end of the first game
Nobody "promised" you that, nor was LoG 2 ever supposed to be a direct narrative sequel or some shit.

Do you have literal, diagnosed autism by any chance? Because this is exactly the sort of shit autists make up in their head and feel they were 'promised'.
>>
>>386060652
Grimoire will be much better, pick it up when it comes out soon.
>>
Goddamn I love Grimrock 2's theme so much.
It's weird, it just feels so perfect for a fantasy game theme. It feels like those old soaring midi themes from Ultima and shit if they properly orchestrated songs. I can feel however ambivalent about playing it, but launching it and hearing that shit on the main menu just gets me in the mood flawlessly every time.

Sorry, I just like my sequels to be more than a Super Street Fighter 2 rehash
>>
>>386061170
There's also a bunch of player made campaigns that are as good and as long, if not longer, than the base game. There's some that you're meant to use your base game's ending party on, too.

Great game. I love the sheer amount of puzzles there are. I went back and did a second playthrough recently and I ran into secrets that were staring me in the face the first time around but I never figured out (like the headstone puzzle).

It also helps that you hear it for the entire length of the party creation. Lots of time to absorb that amazing track.
>>
I'm currently playing it too, actually. Right now, I'm in the big snake pyramid on the eastern side, and I'm stuck with nowhere to go, but I don't think the solution to my being stuck lies outside the pyramid. Real head scratcher, this one.
>>
The magic system was shit.
>>
>>386070532
>It's not that hard, dude.
All I can say is those Summon Stones are pissing me the fuck off. A couple of enemies I have encountered in my journeys will make short work of my entire party if I'm not adequately prepared. It is hard but in a good way.
>>
>>386073592
It was fine, the problem with Grimrock is that a lot of stuff is just really terrible in the context of the game.

If for instance, you choose a certain spell school, you're just fucked. If you choose certain weapon classes, you're fucked, because you may not get access to good shit until later.
>>
What are some tips on killing those summon stones? My melee characters do little more than hit them with the force of a wet sponge. The only way I can kill them is with spells and flame bombs. There is a place where four of the fuckers attack you at once... I had to nope the fuck out of there because the battle seemed impossible at my level.

Never played Grimrock, or or any true dungeon crawler but this all sounds very interesting. Should I play 1 or 2?
>>
>>386074384
2
>>
>>386074384
It's a great game but you should understand that there is no mouse and keyboard movement, which might put quite a few people off, rather you move on a grid using WSAD to walk about and Q/E to turn. Sounds primitive I know but beneath it all there is a great, sprawling adventure to be had. I recommend it.
>>
>>386074384
1 is a bit easier to slide into, but it can be rather monotonous. If you feel your puzzle solving skills are around La Mulana level, then 2 should be a breeze for you. Careful about 2 though, if you play it first and wind up liking it, 1 might become unplayable afterwards.
>>
>>386064724
Amen!
>>
>>386074034
Autism, probably.
>>386074384
As someone who likes 2 more, I'd say 1 is probably better to start with. Unless you really want it to be more open in a kind of daunting way.
>>
>>386075067
There actually is some limited mouselook. You can hold down the right mouse button at look up, down, and a bit to each side. It's fairly useful for looking for secret switches on walls.
>>
>>386070259
>You fit in, stop trying now

>>
>>386062352
That is the exact opposite of how sequel hype works.
