In my experience, doctors that are in it for other reasons tend to be much worse. Idealistic doctors will prescribe treatment with low chance of success and encourage suffering with the best intentions, and through personal experience I've come to prefer a sober, professional attitude over idealism because of it.

You cannot trust someone to care for your life, for they will simply care about their own values and what your life means to them, I'd much rather have someone be honest and clear, than to be pushed into a situation because some idealistic fool would feel bad if they couldn't improve my situation.

Someone who is selfish has far more reasons to want to do the best job he can, because it reflects poorly on them if they don't, that's the attitude I take in my life, and the attitude I enjoy seeing in others, and the attitude I find gives the best results (and I mention this so you understand how I might also be biased here) though I find your concerns interesting and it leads me to ask how much experience you have with doctors?
