Admittedly it's a game you'll either like or hate. It's really boring to me but apparently a lot of people love it so idk. I've seen a lot of people hate it too. I don't like it much, I thought the gameplay was really boring, the art wasn't impressive for some reason despite being good, the music was bland, I couldn't even bother getting past the city of tears area.

Pros: The game has a large open world, enemies are all telegraphed, the art design is phenominal, the boss fights can be very fun, it's way more fun if you haven't played many games like it. Has a nice story, too. The combat can be fun, and your health bar is like a "heart" system from zelda.

Cons: It's pretty derivative, plays very similar to a lot of other games, it's really slow-paced initially and the movement is very static as it's not inertia-based. This also makes it feel very similar to other games. The game doesn't have that much variety and every area feels samey, and the sense of progression is really meh.

It's pretty split down the middle if you'll like it or not.

It has a simple but effective combat system, pretty art design and a lovely world to explore. Its not exceedingly difficult if you are decent at action platformers but some bosses require a couple of tries.
Most fun I had was exploring the world, whenever I was trying to map some faraway corner I ended up finding a whole new area instead, its not very linear after you acquire a couple of movement upgrades. The ingame map system is pretty good too, I never had to look up a guide until I started going for 100% completion
Worst part for me was backtracking all the way around the world after completing most of the main storyline since the fast travel options are pretty limited. I just wish there was a spell that takes you back to the hub. I dunno if the patch added just that
Bought it from summer sale and 100%'d, would recommend if you like metroidvanias or pretty platformers

Hollow Knight is black + 1 color. It's depressing to play and isn't fun to look at or to navigate or to be in. It's a huge issue with the game, really the second largest issue..The art direction is terrible. Not to mention, enemies stolen from binding of isaac, directly, within the first hour. Really?..

/v/ hyped the shit out of it for me (which generally ruins games when I have any sort of expectation for them) and I still thought it was great.

Very non linear, a lot of sequence breaking, and the ability to make custom loadouts using items you find a long the way that augment your regular abilities. That said, I'm also a huge faggot who finds the artstyle very cute and I'm not sure how much of my opinion of the game was influenced by the npc design/general artstyle. If you're already a fan of Metroidvanias, I'd definitely give it a chance. At worst, I think you'll find at least one solid playthrough of it.

Yes. It's on sale right now as well.
Decently lengthy for money, especially when the price is reduced to what it is now (20-40 hours if you don't guide and try to 100% I suppose) with more free DLC on the way. Modestly challenging and generally capable of keeping me engaged throughout, though actual challenge is relegated to a few isolated instances and you can cheese most of those instances due to various factors. It's a fairly open metroidvania where you gradually get movement related powers and your moveset starts to fill out a bit but it can drag its feet a bit at the start and combat doesn't deviate too far from what you have at the start so whether it might still appeal to someone who doesn't completely like it at the start is a bit of a tricky question. Artstyle is fairly simplistic but it fits pretty well. Music is also nice.
Biggest complaint is that it still runs like hot ass with semi-frequent frame drops and my machine isn't even that horrible.
Most of the /v/ related issues are falseflagging and blatant lies.

Not him, but as far as I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong) there are achievements that come in twin sets and you can't do both in one save file.

There are also steel soul modes where if you die once you lose the entire game and have to start over.

There are also speedrun achievements for starting a new game and getting through the game in a certain amount of time.

Plus there's about 30-50 hours of content in the main game itself on a first save file anyway.

I got very tired of it quickly. It's not particularly challenging at all. The upgrade system almost sent a Thousand-Year-Door tingle of fun down my spine but then I realized it was quite shallow because the combat was quite shallow as well.

The music is something a first year composition student could have thrown together.

The actual "feel" of swinging your sword and jumping around is serviceable but pretty much every 2D game has to get that right to work anyway.

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a good discussion of a video game on /v/. It's a shame because I'd like to hear some actual criticisms for Hollow Knight, a game I enjoyed a lot.

One thing that bothered me was the map system, though. I don't like how it doesn't give the layout of rooms on the map, I don't like how it has to be updated by going to a bench due to the fact that you might reach a room you can't get through yet, such as a dark area before you've gotten the item that provides light, and then immediately back out. Instead of only highlighting the entry when you go to update your map it'll just highlight the entire room, though. The map system really resulted in more backtracking than was necessary, something that's already somewhat of an issue with the game.

Lack of weapon power ups was something that peeved me a bit. It's not on the level of Ori where combat power ups are "literally why"-level due to escape and movement abilities being so much better in every situation, and you do get plenty of movement options and a handful of spells in Hollow Knight that obviously have use in combat as well, but I would've liked for there to be altogether new secret weapons to unlock. The charge power up attacks are kind of limited in use and it's so much easier to just use the basic slash on everything, especially since you can use it to jump off enemies and keep dodging as well.

Game content wise it was altogether great, but the Dreamers not being actual boss fights was a big fucking killjoy. While there were several challenging parts the game in general could have been a bit more difficult, I died a handful of times but never lost my Geo. Geo itself pretty much entirely loses its purpose in mid-late game when you're drowning in it.

Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the game.

From what little I've played I couldn't stop comparing it to Super Metroid and concluding that it was inferior in almost every way. But that was kind of a snap judgement and maybe a bit unfair.

Game is good but has some issues. Mapping is done retardedly where you have to find the section of the map first, then the map isnt updated til you find a save spot. Fast travel is a nightmare. There's more backtracking here than in Axiom Verge. Most of your playtime will be spent walking. If you could fast travel from benches the game would be nearly perfect.
Aside from those bad game design decisions, the game plays really well, the music and tone are all great, controls are responsive and bosses are a lot of fun. I'd get it.

It's not. La-Mulana never came to mind simply because you described it so laughably wrong that I figured it couldn't possibly have been that.
Which La-Mulana track is on a 6 second loop? Mr. Explorer? Fearless challenger? They're the two earliest tracks and they're each about 2 minutes long, just like every other track in the game. The majority of which are extremely well put together and highly memorable.
HK tracks in comparison are bland, they fail at aiding the atmosphere and they fail at being memorable. I can't even recall a single track off the top of my head.
