The game oozes charm and uniqueness but the gameplay itself and quest design is atrocious.

I mean, the movesets are awesome, they look and feel fantastic. But even in the harder modes, fast attack and dodge spam is enough to win every battle
>>

Awful game awful story awful gameplay awful characters.
>>
>>386053121
I think my biggest issue is that once you get too over-leveled there's no way to really balance the difficulty out without starting from scratch.

Still miles ahead of the gameplay and quest design in Taro's earlier works though.
>>
>>386053121
Some of the boss sequences get very intense, especially if you are running out of healing items. But I agree, the game could use more enemies overall. Still I really liked going to the deserted town area with infinitely spawning enemies, it made me try.

I hear the DLC can pose a good challenge. How is it?
>>
>>386053641
Healing items were a mistake too.

they ripped dark souls corpse runs and left fucking estus out, which would work wonderfully
>>
>>386053345
I switched to hard when the game got too easy. I think they could just get rid of levels in the game, the game would be easier to balance.

9S's journey through the towers was basically peeling back and desecrating everything he believed and cared about one layer at a time.

N2 was deliberately screwing with him by that point, but I think the fact that 2B is the one in 9S's mind destroying the good memories that he's collected of her parallels how his subconscious knowledge of who she really is taints the idea of a happy relationship that he wishes to have with her.

I just beat the game two days ago, /v/. Wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. Whoever did the soundtrack deserves a round of applause because it was fantastic.
>>
>>386048703
I just beat it two days ago and i thought the main plot and main characters were pretty weak. None of them had enough time to properly develop and their nature as androids was criminally underutilized. With the fact that their consciousness is not attached to their bodies i was expecting a lot more complex shit to happen, and the only thing that really took advantage of that was the hacking. I really liked the rest of the themes in the game though, mainly the machine related stuff.
>>
>>386057404
Well, I think FFXV was trying to be a less intimidating action RPG to ease in the old RPG fans, but their battle system ended up really kind of sucking and failing, and it only shines in like two boss fights. There are flaws with Nier's combat, but it executes "babby's first action RPG" much better than FFXV and it's actually fun to play. It could use more bosses and a revamped difficulty mode, though.

FFXV wanted an open world to explore but it ended up feeling dead and was kind of stupid to move around in. I never got bored running around in Nier, even though the game world isn't as large and is less developed. Nier's moving and jumping actually feels good and different areas even mix up the gameplay.

Lastly FFXV really wanted to have an emotional impact on the player in a way that I don't think XIII or XII tried. The problem is their characters and plot were unfinished. Nier beats it just by being a complete game. It also actually earned its emotional moments. I didn't give a fuck about Luna when she got ganked because she had literally only been in like two cutscenes up to that point. I actually felt feelings again when I got ending E.
>>

>>
>>386055335
It's ambiguous because it's both. 9S hates 2B and loves 2B. He has very conflicting emotions about her. I'm pretty sure this scenes lost something in translation, the nips in threads claim the context implies it's an aggressive word.
>>
>>386058260
>But that's been a recurring theme since the stage play.
Yes, for the project yorha itself. Not outside of it.
Reminder that yorha androids are the only line that is fuelled by machine cores far surpassing traditional energy sources used by simple models. Nobody won't even be able to use their combat data outside of the project because they operate at far higher capacity than Resistance.
>sake of evolution in an endless conflict
Project yorha took less than 10 years.
And androids actually fought desperately, to win.

>>386059163
rape?
>>
>>386058971
It makes a lot of sense when you put it like that.

I actually like Nier's world, even though it's not that big, it's varied enough and very connected.

Also, in my opinion, what makes the game special is how attached the game makes the player to the characters. Even A2, who could really use more fleshing out, was very likeable and it was a pleasure watching her warm up to the machines.

Lastly, I think they tried not to get too lazy with details. When you build a slide you can try it yourself and it actually helps with navigating the village. Little details like that make video games memorable.
>>
>>386059260
I don't know, anon, when I listen to it, I know it's good music, but there is no goosebumps for some reason.

>machine cores far surpassing traditional energy sources used by simple models
Where is that said? I thought the only explanation given for why machine cores were used for Yorha was because androids thought it would be more humane to euthanize recycled enemies rather than normal android A.I.

>Project yorha took less than 10 years.
But the actual war has been going on for thousands of years.

With both sides developing at a rate that never fully outclasses the other because the machine network believed that it needed an enemy to fight.
>>
>>386060958
>Where is that said?
Side materials. Zinnia says that they operate at exceptionally high level of power but require processing on a high amount of machine cores. Also in yorha stageplay it's mentioned that YoRHa androids don't even need to drink water to survive like normal androids and in main game Pascal mentions that machine cores are an infinite energy source.
>With both sides developing at a rate that never fully outclasses the other
Wrong. Machine network was always way more powerful, it merely allowed androids to survive. Androids, on the other hand, fought as desperately as they could.
>>
>>386059976
Well there was belief at the start of Automata that other Devola and Popola units managed to have enough successful mergings with Gestalts and Replicants that some survivors managed to make it to the moon. Explaining why any androids thought that humanity survived.

So Automata cements that it was a complete failure, apart from whatever data they saved on the moon server.

I wish the game had more replay value. I have this problem with a lot of hack'n'slash games of this sort. Once you play them once and get through the story, repeating it for all the collectibles is more like work than fun because the story doesn't stir you as much anymore.

There's not much surprise hidden in the game unless you totally shitter your way through it the first time skipping almost everything

It doesn't really has any moe shit, and the only fanservice is self-destructing and revealing character's stocks. I've never done it over the course of the game.

What did everyone think of the post-yorha part of the game?
Story wise I understand what taro was going for, but the gameplay kind of felt rushed and left something to be desired, considering most of the tower's bosses were re-used and the network brain or whatever those two girls were supposed to represent wasn't even a fight at all.
Also I didn't really care enough about A2, since she was just kinda sprung on us for like the last 1/4 of the game.

Replaying a bunch of the same content for ending B made me not want to replay the game on a higher difficulty, which I do in most Platinum games. A2 should have gotten a longer route with more bosses. I think I only used berserk mode like twice.

I wished they explained the relationship she had with Toobie's memories better. And that they brought up more of the plot of the dumb-ass stageplay so I could understand No. 2's motivation's better. Am I supposed to think of A2 as an extension of 2B, or can A2 separate herself from 2B's memories sufficiently? It seems like the latter, but then what is her motivation for anything she does in that game after that point? She seemed like she didn't want to do anything the whole time, but I was just guiding her to the game's resolution because it's a video game.

>and their nature as androids was criminally underutilized
It's not really a game about that. It's not about AI's or the nature of humanity.

The game has two clear themes. The main one is about your reasons to live. What drives you, why are doing anything? Humanity is an allegory for that, as it represents something unreachable, yet something for which you constantly yearn for. The main character (9S) first has his will to live, in both humanity and 2B. Then he loses them one after another, after which the nihilism came over him. He believes in nothing, only desires destruction of the machines. And still, in the end he finds his own peace (by the memories of 2B, no less). Basically, it is a story of finding the reason of your existence. Not some external one, but for yourself only. In the last dialogue between bots they basically say that life is worth it just for the fact that you are living. Nothing more is needed. You may feel bad, lost, broken, but, sometimes with the help of other people (hence the credits), you can and should live.

The second theme is about longing for your own past. The whole game is full of this dream-like atmosphere of nostalgia. About what you said, "nature as androids was criminally underutilized", I'd say that, for all intents and purposes, both androids and machines are "human". They feel emotions, they eat just because it feels good, take showers and so on. And yet they all strive to be like humans, and in this process they repeat the mistakes of the past. Though androids accuse machines of doing it, they are themselves fully guilty of it. There's also Adam, who superficially looked at the past and decided he understood it all. But maybe someday, we can finally move forward without looking back (that is A2's ending with the rocket launching into space).

Also 2B's personality was more interesting to me, since you could tell she was trying hard to hide her true self. When it leaked through it was always cute and helped add to her character as well.
Maybe if i watched the play i'd like A2 more, but all i knew about her by the end of the game was that she hates machines, betrayed yorha and used to go on missions with Anemone.

I loved the game, wish it was solid and well put together as NGE. Ending E makes it deserve it.

People saying that its a pastiche of scifi ideas aren't wrong. Eva and Ghost in the Shell are as well, its why you hear the term "post modern" thrown around with them so much.

There's also the fact that the Japanese aren't so afraid of wholesail ripping things off and then adding their own spice to the mix.

The game masterfully shows how much 2B's death broke 9S. I don't think i saw any other game showing a person being destroyed by grief so well. The very fact he decided to go on a meaningless one man genocide crusade only added to it, and the fact he becomes a fucking monster in a process who mows down flight units on foot, denies mercy killing and can use chips to make machines scream from pain was over the top.

And then ending D comes and finishes his character ark so well he probably became my favourite Taro character. He's like a Nier 2.0, with way more depth going on for him.

>Also doesn't fit 9S's character
Did you pay attention to like any of the game's hints? It almost explicitly says he knows that 2B keeps killing him, and he's balancing between a burning passion for her as well as an intense hatred. It's the whole reason why he completely loses his shit as C/D goes on, especially during the 2B horde. It's the reason why he gets severely aggressive when Adam asks the question in the first place.
>>
>>386072929

I loved this game at the start

During C route I lost all motivation to play and dropped it for a month.

I'm not sure what happened, but I couldn't care about the game anymore
>>
>>386073583

>>
>>386073583
I had a similar experience with FF9.

I think it's important to have a breather when you are starting to get burnt out, but you also have to make sure the pause is not too long or you will come back to a game that you can hardly remember.
>>
>>386073757
>>386074028
Eh, maybe I got burnt out way more than I thought. I was doing all sidequests and by the time B route dropped I was already overleveled

By the time the game finished I was just mashing X, Y as well if playing as A2 with no regard to anything since all the healing chips I had broke the game.

I also really liked the little chip rpg stuff until I managed to break the game I guess.
>>
>>386073098
Main materials (the game) confirms that he sure does enjoy killing all those 2B clones in the tower.
>>
>>386074379
No, he doesn't. He had a psychotic mindbreak and got fucked up by a virus. 2B's death is what broke him in first place.

>>386073583

3's gameplay is trash and it looked like a PS2 game but I loved it despite this.

It also has an android who was namedropped in Automata
>>
>>386074518
I don't know... I think the virus explains the rampage and the fight with A2 at the end, but I think the way he felt emotionally after finding out the truth of his and 2B's relationship is more responsible for why he tried taking down the tower. And his general hatred for machines and A2. As far as I can tell, infected androids don't go and set long-term goals like bringing down the human AI.
>>
>>386074614
Unfortunately Hard just makes fights more tedious since enemies have more health. It's not like they become more aggressive, or being hit by an attack is any more threatening or likely.
>>
>>386075337
Hard doesn't change the game much when you get overpowered, it just prevents it from being too easy. I had fun with it, but they sure could balance it better.

Eeeh, kind of? Maybe? Some of it? Not really?

There are some interesting ideas, but it's very different in tone from Taro's other games. Less of a tragedy than Nier, and not a gritty cosmic horror like Drakengard 1. More of a gory dark humored murder fest with sex jokes and fourth wall breaks every other conversation.

More variety in gameplay than the first game, but it's still not great.

virus was methodically destroying his memories of 2B and he resisted it as much as he could because 2B is who made him who he is
>>
>>386075467
My main problem was the chip system. You can combine chips to upgrade them, but then they usually take up more slots and they end up not feeling like an upgrade because you don't end up using them. You're better off doing sidequests and exploring to find the special chips that take up less slots.

you get a huge document detailing it. basically the machine's entire purpose was to defeat their enemies, that's how they were programmed. and they realized that if they had no enemy they would have no purpose. so they made sure to have this endless cycle to always have androids as their enemy, if I'm not mistaken.
