how do I know if my computer is overheating or if its just turning off randomly for another reason?

Sometimes when playing a game it will just abruptly reset, I don't hear anything different from the fans, I get no notification or warning, just instantly black screen and then straight to booting back up

Is this overheating? I have a fairly decent rig, i5 2500k, nvidia 970, large case fan on top, 2 medium ones in back and 2 in the lower drive bays.

Seems like a decent enough cooler. Do you do heavy overclocking? You could download some software to control your cpu fan and notify you at certain temp/speeds if you think the resetting is caused by over heating.

I do literally no overclocking because I know of what a fucking bottleneck a CPU can be sometimes.

Like I said previously, I downloaded core temp which is supposed to do that very thing but I have never gotten a single notification of any kind, none about high temps, none after a reset, nothing.

I have no idea if its just some fucking bug in my system, overheating or a dying part, but it ONLY happens during large scale games. Skyrim, no mans sky, etc, which is what leads me to believe its overheating because those become fairly CPU intensive
