I played it and thought it was very good - Good platforming mechanics, good varied objectives, good character banters, big varying worlds.
I noticed that the hate for this game seems to come from people that grew up on handholding casual games. Even the camera isn't difficult at all, unless people don't like having to independently control a camera from the character?
Where is the unwarranted criticism coming from?

This was my biggest gripe with the game.

There are parts where you suddenly lose control of the camera when it needs to be in a fixed place and it's incredibly jarring because you happened to jump up or fly to some area that does this. It's not even a zone thing, its straight up go to a place on the map and its suddenly fixed.

To continue, the dialog was really bad, to the point where i skipped every piece of dialog in this game after the 2nd world because every thing was so uninteresting.

I think an issue that goes with this is so many of the pagies were the same shit in each world. Any time i talked to the cart dude, I just blasted through him saying the same shit, same with the skeleton, the sign, and the retro dude.

How can you defend this game at that point? Games are about fun, not fucking politics.

It's the worst Banjo game but it's still like a 7/10. Definitely welcome considering how long it's been since I've gotten to play a Rare platformer.

>Yooka Laylee's level design falls flat on its face, completely disjointed, damn near impossible to get a good view of each place like you could in tooie to make things much easier to scope out despite it's larger size
The only Tooie stages that don't have a high point where you can get a good view is Grunties industry because more than half the stage is in the building and Glitter Gulch Mine, both are regularly considered the worst

The level design alone is enough to make sure that whatever YL did it wasn't going to beat BK or BT. But it wasn't the only mistake they made
>Platforming is far too powerful (Double jump AND a fucking glide? There's scarcely a jump in the entire game that requires that much aerial mobility, you can hardly fuck up a jump.)

>Other powers were far too situational like turning invisible for only motion sensor doors, of which there are roughly 5 and thematically only fit into the casino world
>Needed an item in the world in order to make half your moves work like the fire and ice breaths
>Half of your moves are used in one way and one way only whereas something like eggs in Kazooie or Tooie were very multi purpose

>Enemies were somehow more phoned in then Kazooies gorilla things that you just ran past every time
>Character designs were lacking a certain charm, honestly everything should have probably been the polycount of rextro because it just doesn't look right

Your taste is just terrible. I'm an oldfag who played the originals and thought them solid but not anything I would have chopped my dick off to have another. Kazooie had minor camera issues and beak bomber controls were a little wonky. Besides that it was a solid little title. Tooie had a lot of backtracking and some rubberbanding AI.

Yooka-Laylee has the worst "minigames" I have ever played in a game. They felt like gamemaker demos. The controls for both the minigames and regular world are off. The minigames are especially poorly controlled because they mapped digital controls haphazardly to analog. Level design is a mixed bag, but the biggest complaint here is that quills are somewhat just slapped around instead of leading to objectives and it can make 100%ing levels a bit tedious to find the last few that you missed. Not a huge deal, but a definite flaw. The minecart levels (in each world) also control like shit and don't have the sharpness to make them interesting. They work on DKC because they hit that sweetspot of forcing the player to make snap decisions in an auto-scroller. Here you have moonjumps, poor hit detection, and basically no variation. The camera is worse than the older games-- how do you program several obstacle courses and then never playtest them to see the camera gets snagged consistently so you have to make blind jumps? I'm not even nitpicking the game here. There are waaaaay more things I could nitpick, but I feel like arguments could be made to dismiss them (lots of pagies just there to take with nothing attached to them, controls on the snowplow, how slopes work, the fucking tedium of the quiz games [controls included, what the fuck], bosses, etc). Is it a terrible game? No. It's certainly playable. However, it does zero things well. Zero. It's like playing a random 3D Sonic game and wondering why it gets panned when plenty of people seem to like it when it's "Just like the Adventure games!"
