DOOM is easily my favorite video game of all time.
ive played so many custom wads, beat doom 1 and 2 5-6 over.
when Nu-DOOM launched I was severely dissapointed, I wanted old and new doom to fuck and have something thats original doom but awesome.

I will say nu-doom fell short in certain aspects, but playing it, I was pleasantly surprised with the campaign, multi isnt that bad either once you get the hang of it.

Aside from updating Valve titles they seem to do literally nothing outside Steam

Doom 2016 led to mods like D4D and D4T, which are an attempt to put NuDoom weapons and enemies into classic Doom.

The guy behind Reelism did MetaDoom, which tries to push the concept further by mixing every Doom game ever made (even mobile games, ports and cut content) to add stuff to the core gameplay of Doom, while still trying to balance things up, so you get a well done mod, with a nice concept.

No where near as much as Doom, but Quake has an excellent mod community. Wolfenstein has some, a great RtCW campaign came out last year, but the best Wolf mods are all part of the WolfenDoom series. Which are Doom mods.
For Quake though, play Arcane Dimensions. It's legit fantastic.

Blade of Agony episode 2 has some questionable its, but episode one is still very enjoyable. And the WolfendDoom series is actually much longer than just the one you're thinking of, which is a spiritual suuccessor to the original line of WolfenDoom WADs.

For a multi million dollar production spanning the course of years and several development cycles for cancelled projects vs an indie game from the 90s with the budget of a homeless man's pity jar, I would say its the best possible adaptation we could of gotten. Compare Duke 3D to Duke Forever, absolutely no regard for the previous title in any way shape or form.
