You have to know someone, it's literally the only way in. My local GAME has been run by the same 5 people for nearly 10 years (that I know of, could be even longer) aside from a few of their friends who they hire on when they can. So it's either know someone, or get hired as christmas staff and do a good enough job or get lucky to be kept on.

I worked there about 6 years ago. It was horrendous. You had a certain number of 'KPI' targets each day, for example: "£200 of accessories" or "£200 of pre-owned". They'd always want you to push shit. Gameware accessories, 'cause there were bigger margins. Pre-owned, because there were bigger margins. We'd often put pre-owned games through the till when people gave us 'new' games, so we'd make more money. Most people didn't notice. We'd make up bollocks like 'you can't play that game unless you buy the £40 Season Pass... " or "You need to activate that on XBox Live, so you should purchase the £50 Gold Membership with Halo 3". I felt like a piece of shit after every shift.
