Ledgers performance aside, the movie is actually really silly, completely inconsistent in tone, has pretty weak pacing and is full of stupid moments that make zero sense except to force in a particular theme. Nolan knows his craft, so technically the movie has a lot of solid cinematography, the Joker is genuinely captivating, but just about everything else falls apart.

I would not say it's awful: for a capeshit movie it... you know about as good as gritty re-telling of a capeshit story can be. But it's still no pinnacle cinematography: the very premise is silly and poorly fitting the tone, a lot of the characters are pretty horrible, a lot of the plot-development is pants on head retarded.

There is no inherent reason why a work aimed primarily at children could not be great and thoroughly enjoyable for adults as well. Movies like say, Secret of Kells or anything by Miyazaki, books like Hobbit or Little Prince are timeless classics that anyone can and should enjoy, regardless of their age.

So saying that it's done for "children" does not mean it's inherently invaluable for anyone who is not a child. It's just a sad unfortunate reality that children storytelling can get away with a lot of shit. Though, then when you think about it, a lot of adult-oriented shit is actually awful too.

To me good taste isn't necessarily the titles you like, it's why you like them. Sometimes I can listen to a person talking about a show/movie/book/game and I can tell that they are actually digesting what they are seeing and not just mindlessly staring a screen slackjawed only coming life when something "epic" happens. These types of people have tendency (but obviously not always) to not enjoy certain types of stuff, such as the Transformers movie franchise.

Good taste involves education: knowledge of history or formal aspects of the medium: the ability to appreciate works of even very different era or style than the one you have been brought up in.
