Really worked for me back in my MMO days, the format fit it so much better than the 10 minute match pump and dump shooters that dominate today. Finding something to hang out with through random FPS lobbies will be next to impossible.
What you want to do is play an MMO with an active raiding scene and join a mid-/hardcore raiding guild. Hang out with them on voice chat and play together, you'll naturally develop friendships. This assumes you actually like the game you picked enough to dedicate yourself to it and aren't garbage at video games.
If you are really shit you can try finding people to talk to in more social guilds that also actively use voice chat, but generally speaking those usually aren't the kind of people I really see guys that frequent these boards getting along with.

I think people want you to read books or watch serious or something.
The best friends I have had are those that read books I like, comics and play vidya.
People on the net usually just share vidya with me and we like different games so we just don't fit. It usually fails because we only like one game, so maybe that's the key to success, to find people that share multiple interests with you, not just a single one.

All of these stories are making me sad. Vidya can make you feel so shitty.

This is the craziest thing to me about my friendship with my best friend. I met him through a Steam friend request thread of all places. Neither of us had never gone into one before and I never did again. I've talked and played with him almost every day for six years and met other people through him. If I hadn't gone into that shitty cesspool of a thread on a whim six years ago I would have nobody and would be a much less happy person as a whole.
