Never played a JRPG before, where do I start /v/?

Start with the mainstream series like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and SMT.

Or if you want to try older, I'd recommend Final Fantasy IV and Soulblazer. Also Dragon Warrior 2 and 3.

Start with FFVII
then Shin Megami Tensei Nine

A good safe entry is Final Fantasy IV. Its on basically every platform under the sun, and is a solid game. For turn-based, Pokemon is a good starting point.

If you want something more active, go with Secret of Mana. If you like puzzles in your RPG, try the Tales Of series, or Lufia 2 if you want to go turn-based.
