In case of Dragon Age and WoW you vould tell an elf apart from a human even if cut out the ears. Also in case of LotR, because they never had remarkable ears, but because their aura more or less. And this is not only about the looks. They are culturelly and spiritually different beings than humans and can't occupy the same space in their respective settings. Japanese elves culture consists of "we live in some forest and shoot the bow" and often they blend into human culture so much that them being elves doesn't matter at all.
