Feels weird man. I could be reading all these manga and visual novels and I just don't give a heck. Oh well, still worth it for video games.

Can we talk about some untraslated games? It's always a good motivation boost for people still learning. I think one of the biggest misses in the west is the Medarot franchise. I beat every game in the series (bar Medarot DS which is awfull) up untill 8 and today I'm planning on starting Medarot 9.

Most of the franchise has likeable characters, lots of charm and the battle system is unique and fun as fuck. Lots of mechanics to learn and parts to use.

That's why it's a problem for Duolingo to ask for the correct literal translations when you don't have enough context for their little examples. You will learn incorrectly if you use it.

Desu is the BE verb or the exist verb. It involves the statement of fact. Desu qualifies the preceding statement as one of fact. One must also remember that in Japanese context is often omitted if previously stated in a sentence.

You're looking for literal translations in a language that is very hard to literally translate. I had this issue when I first started Japanese as trying to find literal translations for Japanese sentences let alone idioms or even transitive and intransitive verbs in sometimes impossible. Doing so will only make things harder for you. You're using a basic level Japanese program, it is teaching you how to respond when someone asks you your name. You don't need to look into it deeper than that.
>>386007776
Desu CAN mean "I am." this is where you're having an issue. I attempted to explain the BE verb to you but you didn't seem to want to listen. Ultimately the tool is fine for learning beginning phrases and getting an understanding of the language and construction.

>>
>>386007776
But that's not correct either. The etymology of です is a contraction of である which means "It is such that". You can use である in sentences (though that would sound quite odd) but derivations/conjugations of it such as であろう are still used in set phrases or patterns. Furthermore the 敬語 form, でござる is still proper and heard all over the fucking place
>>
>>386007961
>I attempted to explain the BE verb to you but you didn't seem to want to listen.
I know. I know.
The problem is that Duolingo doesn't attempt to explain this to you and only asserts this one meaning. This is why I'm saying it's bad.
Ultimately the tool is terrible for beginners and gives them a shaky foundation to build upon and is no replacement for reading a grammar book.

You'll have issues in Kyoto, they're very proud and distrusting of foreigners. If you're working for a company and not as an english teacher you will find it bearable. But you will have issues making friends outside of the expat community. Don't worry about the language, you will learn a great deal being immersed in it. Just take your time, study in your own time. You'll get it.
>>386008084
I'm not sure I agree. Having a foundation for how to respond to basic questions is fairly stable foundation. Later on when you deconstruct and reconstruct sentence structure and verb conjugations you'll see WHY they mean those things. But I wouldn't say it was useless. I also agree that there are excellent books on the subject. But if you're a tourist going to visit Japan some of the things Duolingo will teach you will be useful.

Oh sure, if you only need to know "Hello where is the toilet" then go ahead. Tourists can get by with very little.
If anyone is seriously trying to learn Japanese properly with this app though they're going to be disappointed.

We can all look at the word です and know what it means because we all already know what it means but if you try to analyse the grammar just through what Duolingo shows you then you'll end up with an incomplete understanding of the language.

I completely agree with that. But that doesn't mean it's useless. Most of my initial learning was watching Japanese preschool shows and learning things that way. Catchy songs etc. But they don't teach you the hows and what for's of the language at that stage. You build into it later.
I think it's a perfectly fine starting point for people who are interested in the language and want a quick program they can use. Much like a phrase book. But if you want any serious learning I'd also agree that you'd need books and a japanese to english dictionary along with I'd argue, tutelage by a native Japanese speaker.
>>386008406
Then you'll probably be with other English speaking students I'd wager. I'm sure you'll have fun. But don't expect to integrate into the larger community off campus easily. And certainly not without a fluent understanding of the language and Kyoto dialect.

Well, one of the professors to whom I now owe a very long letter of thanks is also a Michigan chap like me, so he's taken the liberty of letting me know just what kind of torture I'm in for.

Now, I was pleasantly surprised - the living situation seems pretty cheap. Until now I paid electric and internet, but in my tiny Kyoto apartment I'll pay electric and gas instead, even with AC on to aid my heat intolerance I expect it to be much less per month than I was paying for my apartment in Lansing.
I also laughed (literally, which was quite rude) at the expression one of the Kyodai workers made as she was explaining to me yearly tuition for a graduate student. Her look suggested that she was expecting me to be worried about it, but it's less per year than a single semester of undergrad here in the States. So money-wise I think I'm in okay shape.

Maybe you should learn English first.

>>386008954
Yeah my monthly rent is like 38000 yen a month and then another 10000 for utilities and whatnot and it's basically $500/mo for a 1LDK which is the Jap equivalent of a studio and more than enough space for me

Any clever impact this response might have had is diminished by the fact that suggesting someone should start learning one language in order to start learning another, completely different language

You need a good command of english in order to translate into english, something that is lost on a great many fan translators.

Not really.
Unless you're going to translate the said games not into English, but some other subhuman language.

In fact it's more important to know the language you're translating to, than the one you're translating from.
You only need to understand the meaning of the phrase you're translating. But you have to be able to give this meaning a proper literary form in the language you're translating to.

who are we bullying here, the wannabe translator or the guy trying to defend him?

anyway yeah. don't translate into english if you're not at least a decent writer in english. or at least get yourself a good editor. but editors who don't know the original can sometime fuck up.

it's very important to get as close as possible to the precise intent, tone, specific word choice, and overall feeling of the original writer in whatever bargain bin isekai haremshit that it is likely you'll be working on.
>>
>>386009575
Well said anon, also because there may be far more nuances in your language than you'd think, and those are a great resource when you find similarly nuanced dialogue to transpose.

I'm not bullying you anon, just stating the obvious.

H-games don't deserve your top dedication tho, in fact akwardly translated dialogue creates a cognitive disconnect that minimizes your sense of guilt after playing the stuff. This is useful for the really embarrassing ones.

there is something specially soul-destroying about translating bad porn. i don't know what exactly, maybe it has to do with having to think about each mind-numbing sentence, break it down into its components, and reconstruct it in a new way forces you to think longer and harder than anyone should ever have to about bad porn.

but it's fucking ego-crushing like nothing else. you'll want to jam things far enough into your ears you can taste colors.

Weird, I feel that way about translation in general.

It's like an awful puzzle in which there are almost never any correct answers, and most of the time you're choosing between varying flavors of shit. And then occasionally, they throw in a pun or something which means you have to go and fucking write your own or just leave it out.
>>
>>386010372
>in fact akwardly translated dialogue creates a cognitive disconnect that minimizes your sense of guilt after playing the stuff.
I wouldn't call it guilt at all but I do feel very awkward reading porn in my own language. I'm much more comfortable reading it in English, badly translated or not.
>>
>>386010725
well yes but that's a slightly different kind of awful feeling, like you're taking a thing you love and just butchering it. like that lady who tried to redo the christ painting a while back and just royally botched the whole thing. that's what i feel like all the time, like i'm taking something that used to be great and running it through a fucking woodchipper.

and FUCK puns.

kinda wish there was a board for translation or something. i need to vent in places that aren't /a/ or /jp/, considering neither of them know japanese most of the time.

Anyone still here?
I just tried using Anki, core deck. How do you learn with it because I'm not remembering anything, it's not even sticking short term.
Do you read eveything aloud, do you pay attention to the sentences too? Should I bother even looking at or trying to memorize the hiragana? I mean the hiragana is kinda useless. Just the kanji and translation should be enough.

I don't even know what I'm doing

Well you've got that right.
>>
>>386012895
A lot of words are often written in haragana because even Japs often don't bother with kanji. How the fuck are you using anki in the first place, if the core deck has pronunciation written in hiragana? How do you read the fucking verbs? Clearly you do not know what you're doing.

As for memorization - you just gotta do it yourself. Practice enough and put some effort into it, and you should start doing better. But it will not do you any good in long term, if you don't apply it on practice and actually try and read/watch something.

Do like 20 cards a day.
It's not that hard, I learnt japaense and now I'm learning korean.
Read>>386013026
You don't lean kana (hiragana & katakana) in a day
You spend a little time going them over then go through a grammar guide like tae kim or imabi and read easy stuff, immerse yourself in the language.

i "learned" hiragana and katakana over the weekend using realkana
>>
>>386013147
I mean I can hear it, but yeah if the japanese don't use kanji most of the time, then memorizing the hiragana is useful too. Also I didn't really mean just straight up ignoring the hiragana, but there's a difference between memorizing the hiragana in relation to the word itself, and not just using it as a guide as to how the kanji is pronounced when needed. But if you say they don't bother using kanji then memorizing the word in hiragana is useful as well. I know hiragana by the way.

>>386013250
Oh well if it's only 20 cards for an entire day then I should be fine.
>>
>>386013740
You can go higher I did 50 a day at a time once, but had a lot of free time. It really depends.
I'm doing 30 learning korean now since it's easy to remember. Though I did only start a few days ago.
>>
>>386013740
Learning kanji without learning hiragana is like learning English word by word, without actually understanding what do individual letters mean.

On the other hand, learning individual kanji alone is almost just as stupid. When it comes to kanji it's more important to learn the words they're used in first, and what each individual kanji second, to reinforce your understanding of the word.

What baffles me in Japanese, is that while words made up of several kanji usually make sense, because the meaning of the word is roughly similar to what the individual kanji it's made of represent.
But any semblance of logical structure crumbles at intrakanji level. Because often the meaning of the kanji has jack shit to do with the meaning of the radicals it's made of.
>>
>>386013740
20 *new* cards every day.
You will have to review the cards you (think you have) already learned at regular intervals. Quite obviously those will only accumulate over time.
>>
>>386013740
General rule of thumb is to expect
new cards * 10 = total cards per day.
At 20 new a day i was getting 250~300 total and at 50 new a day I'm getting 500~550 total.
