Even the gameplay I found to be fucking awful. They take standard mechanics like dodge canceling and make it only kind of work some of the time on some characters. Nothing in the game felt good in any kind of way, save for maybe the air dashing thing. I rented the game for free and still felt ripped off.

The weird thing is, Neptunia U, made by the same people... I actually found enjoyable. Kinda retarded and imbalanced but, playable at least.

If you played Estival Versus then yeah, that makes sense. It fucked with a lot of what made Shinovi a decently fluid brawler. However, I think Estival had a more satisfactory difficulty curve - Shinovi is just too damn easy despite it playing more smoothly. I ultimately preferred Estival for that reason, it wasn't exactly hard but it wasn't Shinovi braindead either.

Play Burst, I suppose. The characters got flanderized to hell in the Versus games. They also assume you're familiar with the character's backstories, though I feel Shinovi did a lackluster job of introducing its new characters as well. Estival had to pick up the slack and flesh out New Hebijo and Gessen a little bit, to slightly less middling effect. But Burst plays out like a decent shonen with tragic backstories for days. The series never was quite that good with its characterization in subsequent games.

This I don't understand. Nep U was legitimatly awful and "playable" only in the sense that "pressing one button continuously will eventually beat the stage for you" in most characters and circumstances.

I can dig not liking SK - even by bad musou standards they're not designed particularly well. But NepU was bottom of the barrel shovelware even compared to SK, literally shit out overnight just to collect a few contract dollars.
