You can play my old hack from back in the day, Sonic 1 Pixel Perfect. You can only play through Green Hill, and a little bit of Marble unfortunately. Also don't mind the two random monitors at the start of GHZ1, we were adding extra monitors before development stopped. We had done custom art for all of the stages except Starlight, but if I remember right we also changed the stage select code, so you won't be able to see it.

A few years back some Russian asshole combined what we had with some other guys hack and released it as Pixel Perfect Ultimate, so I suppose you would have a more complete experience playing that.

- My favorite intro level in the entire series. It gets a lot of flak for being a Green Hill clone but I find it couldn't play farther from. Green Hill focuses on allowing the player to build speed once they've learned to time their jumps and rolls through the stepped hills and slopes. Its the best designed zone from the first game with exploration kept local to the main paths. Emerald Hill instead grants speed off the bat and opts to penalize the yet unfamiliar for running blind with zone hazards and badniks, keeping a more open air design with fewer nooks.

Remember when I said Green Hill had decently lineated main paths with exploration kept sort of in the immediate vicinity off in nooks and such? Chemical plant is that design philosophy perfected. God damned near perfect zone.

Amazing sound track, great sections of speed, fantastic exploration. The best showcase of high path/low path penalty/reward dichotomy in the series. Amazing zone.
>Flying Battery
I love Wing Fortress but find it lacking in areas. It feels under cooked a bit. I love Metropolis but it can be a bit rough on the edges. Flying battery is the best design elements of both with a heap of polish added, a phenomenal theme song, and great bosses. My all time favorite mechanical stage.

The design just doesn't look fun, the only part that looks fun to me is the Modern Sonic stage and that takes a minute from what i've seen and is heavily automated. OC wisp shit looks obnoxious, OST for the most part is straight up bad to me, as if it were a take on 'kids are into lotus juice, right?'. The talking is obnoxious as fuck in stages as well.

I don't hate Forces it just looks meh to me. Like they have no idea what direction to take Sonic and are just sticking to what works. Playing it safe (in terms of gameplay) is the easiest way of guaranteeing we won't get another disaster but it's also pretty boring. You can tell they're trying their hardest to appeal to everyone but it's a jack of all trades situation.

The EDGE is one thing. The bigger concern is that it just looks fucking ugly so far.

The reveals for Unleashed, Colors, and Generations were all gorgeous. Forces looks like it could be an iPad game. The 2D gameplay especially looks dismal.

You can't look at the map anymore without pressing a button to cover your whole fucking screen, which throws the main gameplay gimmick of the original out the window.

The new stages and music are extremely bland and forgettable compared to the first game. The best stages from the original so far are nowhere to be seen.

Back when Sonic Boom was being released there was a guy coming here on /v/ telling us stuff about it's story line to prove he was a legit leaker, everything he said was true and he said the only game sonic team was working on was a game called "Sonic Runners" that was written on a whiteboard.

Now we know that sonic runners was a real thing and it was before the game was announced so I imagine the leaker was legit. So what this means is that Forces would have started development after October 2014 maybe even after March 2015 which was when runners was released.

The game is going to get tons of negative reviews from people complaining that the game blasts you into enemies you can't see, the speed makes you loose control, the game is poorly designed, ect. This is going to be forefronted by journalists like Jim Sterling, which leads to Kotaku/Youtube figures to respond the same, leading to the Lets Player crowd jumping in to trash on this game as well. Reddit and NeoFag communities are not even going to bother touching it because their bad ass video game idols are telling them not to

The game is going to fail hard while Forces gets the same treatment but lives due to advertising to children and physical copies. Whitehead and the others won't be invited back into SEGA because of this disaster. Mania is an amazing game that is coming out during a period where people can't handle basic gameplay mechanics and are willing to fall towards idolization to help them instead of deciding themselves.

Everyone went back to play the originals and got their asses kicked since it was so different. You eventually warm up to them though. I don't hate Forces. I'm mostly just disappointed with, and thus ambivalent towards, it.

In 2006, Sonic 06 lowered the bar to unseen depths.

In 2008, Sonic Unleashed raised it significantly.

In 2011, Generations followed suit, and raised the bar even more.

In 2016, Mania's reveal alone raised the bar to heights I'd completely given up on seeing the franchise ever reach again.

Also in 2016, Forces shows that Sonic Team is incapable of raising the bar higher than Generations did. And in 2011, that would have been cool. Unfortunately, they revealed Mania first.

BOOST:
On one hand, it's nice to see that they're doing Boost, rather than something like Lost World.

On the other hand, from what they've shown, it looks like the same old shit at best, and a step back at worst. I'd expect some solid innovation after 6 years. Yet shit's still looking linear as fuck, still 2D shit, no multiplayer, and there are no other playable characters besides Modern Sonic.

CLASSIC:
On one hand, it's nice that Classic Sonic is getting some love. After all, his presence was literally the most hype thing about Generations for me.

On the other hand his presence here is superfluous. He already has a game in Mania, and his gameplay is given much more care in Mania. And if he was kept in Mania, he wouldnt be around to further fracture the development between multiple games.

OC:
On one hand, it's a perfect fandom meme to incorporate into the game for some meta-commentary, intentional or not.

On the other hand, it gets its own gameplay style that isn't Boostshit. I'm down for Boostshit. I'm down to see Boostshit given some gameplay diversity through subtle gameplay tweaks. I dont want to play a largely 2D mediocre-looking run n gun. I signed up for Boostshit. I'll sign up for this crap when they spend a full game focusing on fleshing it out and polishing it well enough to stand on its own.

If something can't stand on its own, it belongs as a minigame.

Blue Sphere is just more involved because of the increasing speed and you can even get a perfect bonus on the first time if you have good timing, half pipe is sort of like you can still get the emerald, but your first time will be choppy, as recognizing the patterns requires a huge deal of focus. You know, it's not like we need to worry about if Mania undersells or flops at all. Even if it does, the demand for another Mania-like title will increase, and SEGA will have to give into those demands if they want to have the Sonic fanbase have a resurgence.

Metropolis has the advantage of at least being short. I think marble is fine, mostly due to the enemy placement not being garbage, but Sandopolis, and Carnival night zone have problems with length.

And not only that but the samples were predominantly used in the JP soundtrack and they were taken from Western audiences, you think it's coincidence that the US soundtrack is different? The story is hilariously bad, but the gameplay is mostly straightforward and a projectile attack isn't a gamebreaking gimmick. Sonic Heroes's slipperiness is still there, but being dialed back to a single character makes it more managable. The only really bad levels are on the Ark, and the true final boss battle. Sure the Insta-Shield was kind of a situational move that had enemies designed around it (Orbinauts, Chainspikes, etc.) but it was still pretty practical in spite of that (since you could whiff a jump but sometimes still tag an enemy by Insta-Shielding properly).

How? Bullet Station is far better than Rail Canyon. Frog Forest is a great level. Lost Jungle is also pretty good since it has multiple paths, including ones you have to be very skilled at to avoid black frogs and get to, and it's the only level that lets you skip every giant hammer enemy with good skill. Hang Castle is also a fun and unique level, Mystic Mansion I can see why it's bad. Egg Fleet is fucking amazing, so many multiple paths in that level it's ridiculous. Final Fortress has too many forced combat against giant enemies so that level sucks too. Overall that's only two really bad levels post-Rail Canyon.

Does anyone else genuinley love Sandpolis zone? I honestly find both parts of it pretty goddamn great. Also after replaying Marble Garden the zone isn't all the bad. My only issue with it is the big swinging spike ball traps and those floating spikey badniks.

I honestly don't see why either zone catches so much hate, pretty much all of Sonic 3 and Knuckles ranges from good to amazing for me.
