The problem with the gaming industry, triple A in particular, is that they're creating Loch Ness monsters. 50, 100+ million budget games that need an absurd number of copies sold just to break even. The consumer base simply isn't there, so they add shitty DLC and microtransactions in non-F2P games to make up for it. Scale the fuck back. Scale back marketing, scale back management, scale back graphical fidelity if it helps. Bring the budget down to 10 or 20 million and put it where it matters.

Something in between indulgent triple A, and bare-bones indie. Enough of a budget to get the talent that indie doesn't necessarily have, but still small enough that it doesn't take much to make your money back. Stop paying off games journalists and reviewers.

Unless EA was just mercurial as fuck and couldn't make up its mind, they probably had to endure that because they kept fucking up. And being forced to use Frostbite doesn't affect how well their artists can sculpt a face in Maya or whatever they use.

It's a real shame too, because the core gameplay was solid. Combat was miles better than in previous games. Somewhere along the line, they just severely underestimated how important visual fidelity is to the people playing this sort of game. In a "cinematic" title, especially one where you are supposed to become intimately familiar with the characters and really get to know them, hate them and love them (AND where you're seeing close-ups of their faces all the time) they really should not have spared any expense making those parts of the game look fucking immaculate.

And at one point, they did consider it. That "leaked" footage of the scene with the krogan gassing a mercenary actually looked like something on par with other big budget cutscene-heavy games of today. And the release version just had almost none of it left, I can't fathom what the fuck happened.

I used to toy with the idea that they had a more complete version of the game done but someone pissed on a server they shouldn't have and fried a year's worth of highly polished model and cutscene data, forcing them to use shitty older assets.
