Bloodborne is literally the most Lovecraftian thing I've ever experienced. It honestly outdoes all of his stories in terms of Lovecraft-ness.

>dreams are literal dimensions you can travel to
>the old ones have incomprehensible motives
>humanity is at the bottom of the food chain

The only thing bloodborne gets wrong is the fact that you can kill old ones. Even then Cthulhu, the dunwhich horror, the deep ones at Devils reef, and the old ones were mortal creatures that could die.
>>
No video game really embodies any of the feeling of Lovecraft

For a videogame to be Lovecraftian, you'd basically have to only show "shapes" and not entire critters
Then have the main character die, but don't show the death on the screen

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.
-H.P. Lovecraft

>>
>>385981598
Do you really even kill them? You get the NIGHTMARE SLAIN message only a couple of times, once for killing an actual baby and once for killing Orphan, but Orphan was within a dream and the final cinematic says he pretty much just was freed to go back into the ocean. And Moon Presence only fights you if you're basically an old one yourself at this point.

but yes the idea of things dead but still dreaming is pretty much the entire essence of BB
>>
>>385981598
I mean, they kinda just retreat further into dreams don't they? The baby and orphan were both dead but remained in the dream
>>
>>385981804
I read about that too. Shit's pretty legit
>>
>>385981442
A big thing in Bloodborne is forbidden knowledge that grants you great power at the risk of insanity, which is even represented at times by a status effect that deals massive damage if you stare at some horrific shit for too long.

Also what >>385981603 said. But, even though in Bloodborne you're able to kill Great Ones, the ending still shows that whatever's going on is way beyond you: in one ending you get a 'happy' end but the awful events of the night are likely to repeat; in another you become a plaything of a Great One; in the last you gain loads of knowledge and become a baby slug with the purpose of ushering in the next stage of mankind, whatever that might be.

>>385981603
A game really "true" to the feeling and narrative of Lovecraft's works would probably mean the player (or atleast their character) has relatively little agency, or their actions have little impact. Something like a point-and-click or a walking simulator where you do get most of the storyline in the course of a regular playthrough, but there's lots of gaps in your knowledge that you've got to fill in by looking for all the letters, newspaper articles, police reports, etc etc scattered about the location.

First setpiece once you get into the town is top tier shit-your-pants horror, then it goes a bit downhill after that, while still pretty decent. You need a good tolerance for bugs and clunk and other hallmarks of unpolished games, though.

>>
>>385981598
You don't kill any of them in Bloodborne, apart from arguably Mergo which is more "you've got so many eyes on the brain" case of usurping them.

Bloodborne really needed to push it. The player character getting warped, the chalic dungeons getting crazy, Byrgenwerth being 5 times larger since it's easily the best level in the series, that sort of thing.
>>
>>385983167

You do kill the three nightmare ones, presumably. With Rom and Ebriatas it's hard to say, because they reappear in the Chalice Dungeons, which might just be a gameplay thing but it might be indicating they do actually live in.

You also kill a handful of amygdalas, which are Great Ones but 'lesser,' according to the arm description.

Try Infra Arcana.
It's a roguelike that is "harder" than the entire soulsborne series combined.
>>
>>385983824
I swear to god I remember some item description or something about killing them just meaning they retreat further into the dreams.

Chalice Dungeons are weird and don't have much to do with anything.
>>
>>385983873
Why would I want harder games? Harder isn't really a good thing. Even Ninja Gaiden is honestly not particularly hard (when you figure out what you're doing).

Except unlike Lovecraft, there is actually an ending where the character doesn't die/go insane (Sunrise ending).

The Moon Presence is the Great One that created/controls the Hunter's Dream. It was 'beckoned' by Lawrence and Gherman. Presumably they made a deal with it in order to have access to trained hunters so the beasts could be fought off.

The One Reborn isn't really given much explanation. It's probably some Old One and/or the result of a fucked up Mensis experiment.

>>
>>385987338
He was a writer of short stories, poems, etc., so you're not so much looking at getting into his books as you are cycles of the same brand of his fiction. Some are predictable and cliché by today's standards, and some people just don't like his style of writing, but he's had an enormous inflation on modern fiction for a reason. I love the atmosphere and the settings, but it's up to you to give it a shot and see if it floats your boat.
>>
I wish Bloodborne had more replayability. It's a fantastic game, but I've never felt the urge to do more than 2 runs with different weapons.
>>
>>385987542
Poe's prose totally holds up, though.

The tell-tale heart flows better than most contemporary short stories. I mean the dialogue is awkward, but that's the era for you.
>>
>>385987802

I can't pick one, but most of these:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_Cycle

It's a great starting point for people who want to get into Lovecraft. The content of his writing is great but the actual writing itself is pretty mediocre in my opinion. I read At the Mountain of Madness as my first lovecraft story and it was a slog. I wrote him off until I read his dream cycle stories and found them to be written much, much better.
>>
>>385987813
If they just modded it so every area was continually able to be invaded or summoned in, no bell crap, it'd hold up better.

But then you have that gem shit and all that easily doubles your damage if you stack them right. That shits fucked.

This >>385987802

Just give the audio books a shot and if you like it you can get into the reading. A friend of mine really liked The Shadow Over Innsmouth, was too predicable for my taste and kinda boring. I liked The Dunwich Horror and he hated it.
>>
>>385987684

The Stand is everybody's favorite novel by him and is arguably the American LOTR, IT, The Running man, 11/23/63, Pet Semetary, and my underrated Stephen King favorite is "The Long Walk" wich is about a weird contest in a dystopian America where the corrupt government that toke over the country after the Nazis win make a national holiday called "The Long Walk" where a hundred guys are set up and ave to walk at 4MPH or above. You go slow? You die. You veer off course? You die. You touch other contestants? You die

just played through that sequence again today. Really amazing stuff. Everythings unsettling in a way. From the loud-ass banging while the fishmen break down doors, to the 2 friendly characters dieing within minutes of eachother, and the couple visions of the asylum. I think one of the reasons it's less creepy after this sequence is because you get weapons and the enemy AI is incredibly easy to sneak up on and can barely aim.
I think 2 things make call of Cthulhu Darkest corners of the earth great.
1. the lack of HUD elements.
2. the way it handles the loss of sanity. Like while walking down the sewers and you hear that little dead girl's voice I found it creepier that later on when alone the player character who you are controlling whispers to himself. It creeped me out because there was nothing happening but the effects of previous encounters were still very evident, and it's the character you control doing something without your input.

It's a cartoon made by a rapist. Who cares? Roland looking a certain way literally doesn't impact his character at all, You would have a point if you said something like "what if they made Shaft white" because Shaft being black is a crucial point of his character
>>
>>385990119
Some people might get pissy, movie might bomb, but in the end, no one would really care all that much.

The Hendrix thing would never get made. Biopics are a wee bit different from adaptations. I know that it's a little hard for you to understand others, but people would rather see a good actor than one who looks exactly like how the character is described. Like Morgan Freeman in Shawshank.

But obviously there is a blatant hypocrisy going on, wouldn't you say? Of course some people aren't happy with casting Roland as a black man. It's a change of his fundamental character.

>>385990317
>Roland looking a certain way literally doesn't impact his character at all
Than why was he written as a White man in the first place? Why wasn't he written as a raceless, sexless blob with non-descript appendages?
>>
>>385989283
I think the last time I played it was about 6 months ago, but when I did you could still get constant invasions, 0 downtime, in Nightmare Mensis, so there's that.

But that's a pretty piss-poor excuse. As much as people bitched about twinkers - and rightfully so, they're faggots - you still got invaded from the getgo right up to the very end of Dark Souls and Demons Souls back in the day.

I'm not saying that the multiplayer is some integral part of this dev's output, but it adds a lot of novelty and makes repeat playthroughs a lot more fun to just dick around in.

>>
>>385990429
>Than why was he written as a White man in the first place? Why wasn't he written as a raceless, sexless blob with non-descript appendages?
Because Stephen king just thought "okay, what it this character? Eh, I'll make him a white dude. No one really cares."
>>
>>385990005
Yes but even that doesn't have much impact. Not only is there no indication where the Lecture Hall even once existed, though the Slime Scholars are unsettling when you first encounter them, that's about the extent of the research you see. There's just the same generic bottles and jars everywhere and some empty cages, and nothing to suggest what they even did in their research.
>>
>>385990429
>Than why was he written as a White man in the first place

Because Stephen King is a white guy in America where "White guy" is the default. At no point does Roland being white affect his personality, the plot, or even minor shit. It's like The Stand taking place in the late 80's instead of 70's in the expanded edition, it changes nothing except year names but the plot remains the same

Making him a little person would likely affect the plot. And the plot sort of excludes the potential of anything more than cross-dressing, which wouldn't effect what Roland would wear, seeing as it's a situation of survival, rather than fanciness, so you wear what you have.

Try Deathstate if you want some Lovecraft mixed with bullet hell.

Plot wise it borrows from Lovecrafts stories as well as other horror. The general premise is you go looking for your professor who has been doing unorthodox research. You and his library get pulled into another dimension. The only way out is exploring other realms by psychically projecting yourself there using the tech he left behind, but they're filled with all kinds of eldritch horrors.

Gameplay wise your character fires at the closest enemy while you concentrate on dodging and moving. There are bunch of characters, items and harder modes to unlock.

Why do people just make up fake "facts" for thier arguments?

From didn't distance themselves from Lovecraft comparisons, in an interview found in the Official Guide Miyazaki specifically name drops Lovecraft as one of two major influences he had when designing the game.

Also BB's lovecroft elements arnt just
> dude aliens lmao
that's only a tiny aspect, Bloodborne is much more influenced by Lovecraft's less known work involving dreams and alternate dimensions and such. When someone says "Bloodborne only took tentecles and claims to be Lovecroftian" then it's proof that they either didn't pay any attention to BB's story or have only a minuscule exposure to Lovecraft.

You do know that Wet Nurse is an actual thing, right? It's not a made up term. In Ye olden days it was seen as unattractive to breastfeed so upperclass and royal women would have lactating women feed thier babies for them. They were called wet nurses.

You still might find that erotic, I don't know.

In terms of animal intelligence (disregarding things like Dolphins and Apes which are extremely far above), on a scale of 1-10 cats are typically around a 7. Every cat I've ever owned has immediately known to use the litterbox for the rest of it's life after being shown it once, and has been extremely easy to keep.

Dogs start at around a 3, but they can be trained to a 9-10. Dogs can learn how to do some pretty dope shit. However if you let them they'll just shit in your house and be stupid their whole life

>lmao dude that's so Lovecraftian!
I'll refer you to a post that a smarter anon has made once. It was in reference to literature, but it works here nonetheless.

Lovecraft didn't have a deep vocabulary, he just kept using the same "deep" words over and over again without any originality. Cyclopean. Eldritch. Singularly. There's a lot more to writing then vocabulary.

If you like Lovecraft and his ideas, try the writers that Lovecraft liked and ripped his ideas off of.

If you like indescribable horrors from beyond time, space, and human understanding, read Algernon Blackwood.

If you like slimy undersea horrors like Chtulhu, Dagon, or the Innsmouth fish people, read William Hope Hodgson.

If you like strange books driving men mad, read Robert Chambers.

If you like strange fantasy realms just behind the veil, with weird names and strange creatures, read Clark Ashton Smith.

If you like odd decayed ruins, run down hovels, weird mythological figures causing mischief in forgotten rural backwards, try Dunsany.

There's a whole world out there filled with fantastic weird fiction, and HPL's just babby's first author. He's for casuals, in the worst sort of way

The whole point of books is to enchant the reader, draw him in, but his writing is so fucking boring and sluggish that you can feel your braincells dying in real time. >There's a reason people don't read much Lord Dunsany today
There's a reason people don't read much today period. Because people want something that's easier to digest, and that's not books. Lovecraft is overrepresented because, again, his IDEAS worked great in movie/show/videogame adaptations, but not in his books.

That still makes cats dumb though. Dogs are smarter in that case because they understand the relationship that an owner and itself has. One of love and trust where if the owner benefits, then the dog benefits as well. The cat doesn't do what an owner wants it to, they do what they want and are therefore breaking the owner/pet relationship.

Check out H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Barlow's relationship. Shit's tragic.

Barlow was a lot younger and gay, but there was apparently no romance between the two. In the end, H.P. named Barlow as the successor of his literary estate, which caused a ton of other people to throw a shitfit, including August Derleth, who would go on raping Lovecraft's legacy for a couple of decades. Barlow couldn't handle this and bailed, understandably.

He spent the rest of his life studying mesoamerican ancient cultures, but was driven to suicide probably for his gayness, by taking a fuckton of secobarbital.

His suicide note, left on his door, read "Do not disturb me, I wish to sleep for a long time." written in fucking mayan pictographs.

Cats are incapable of reciprocating hospitality at the level at which dogs do, they are also harder to condition or train; it's harder to teach them.

Dogs are also superior to cats when it comes to hunting, tracking, long distance running, rescue and property protection. There is a reason dogs are "man's best friend", not cats.

Lovecraft's horseshit opinion only validates how shit cats are; he's an a-social introvert, just how cats are a-social introverts. They belong together, and dogs do not belong with cat "people".

My cocker spaniel is a cool son of a bitch, but he does like more attention. Even then, all he needs is a blanket and a chew toy and he's content just sitting next to me for hours. I leave him out in the yard most of the day so he gets his exercise but he's perfectly comfortable being inside too.

I grew up with a dachshund which we eventually gave up for adoption. You can't properly develop a bond with a dog when you're that young, once you're able to take responsibility for yourself then you can fully appreciate having a pet that actually NEEDS you, and through providing needs and spending time with them you develop an actual bond with them. THIS is what catfags will NEVER understand, "low maintenance, self cleaning" that's all they give a flying fuck about, they dont actually give a shit about their pet. All they see is a checklist, whether they'll grow to love their pet enough to overlook their status as merely a "pet" doesnt matter to them, all they want to know is whether it can shit in a box and clean itself.

You fuckers are insufferable, please for the love of GOD do not ever adopt a dog.

Caturdayt was 90% a /b/ thing and was basically something that devolved into shit by 2006 or so, it spawned such abominations as 'i can has cheezburger', although it did give some absolutely righteous laughs in the early days.

Cats are nice, so are dogs. I'd prefer a dog over a cat, a dog serves an actual fucking purpose, and unless you got a retarded designer dog, while it is more needy, will also protect your home before you have to.

The Statement of Randolph Carter

If anyone can suggest more like this, I would love to know. I prefer the stories where there's less explanation about the horrors. Like I loved the Mountains of Madness up until he started to describe the history of these ancient species. The suspense was so good up until that.

I loved how it contrasted with his other stories, because the strange and alien things just lived there and Carter just dealt with it, it had a very whimsical quality and reminded me of a darker version of Alice in Wonderland

out of his traditional stories, I like the Dunwich Horror and Shadow Over Innsmouth the best

in this situation a cat would be better for you, if you dont have the time or ability or you dont have a child with the time or ability to take care of a dog then dont get one. Taking care of dogs is also a good way to teach kids responsibility.

>Bloodborne really needed to push it. The player character getting warped, the chalic dungeons getting crazy, Byrgenwerth being 5 times larger since it's easily the best level in the series, that sort of thing

this so much. I only recently beat bloodborne (my first soulsborne game) and I've got to say I was pretty disappointed in how safe and formulaic the game felt. Insight, beasthood, and frenzy/insanity could've been such interesting mechanics but in the end they're pretty much completely meaningless. Like imagine running through the field with the brain of mensis and you start seeing hallucinations and shit which kill you, rather than just some asinine fucking bar.

We evolve as becessitated anon, not as cool factor demands. Why aren't there giant bugs?
Why aren't there giant Lizards anymore?

One explanation is the level of oxygen needed to maintain such big bodies. We simply do not have enough oxygen levels to support it adequately.

Another reason is thay we do not require it. Humans did not rely on pure strength for humting, they relied on tooling and pack mentality.
Dogs are also pack creatures. They make up for size in numbers.

Cats are solitary and even within packs have a clear chain of positions. They dont always hunt together.

The Dream-Quest of Unkown Kadath, At The Mountains of Madness and The Shadow Out of Time are my favourites, as is most of the Dream Cycle/Dunsanian short stories like Celephaïs and Polaris.

Cats are intelligent and capable enough to hunt in groups and sometimes hunt solo. Get fucked dog fiddler.

>>386014369
Cats are smart enough to know their "owners" still love them while at the same time they form their own plan B by going to other people behind their "owner's" back. Cats are lightyears ahead than dogs.

>inb4 but hurr durr feels hurr durr loyalty!

Fuck off. Evolution doesn't care. Yes there are benefits to being loyal and caring but not to a retarded point like dogs. If it wasn't for humans being so dumb, there wouldn't be many dogs today.

The greatest ancient civilziations worshiped cats more than dogs. Many of their depictions when it comes to high status symbols included some sort of feline.

>inb4 Anubis

I am a huge fan of Lovecraft. Ive been reading him for 5 years. Ive experienced different ways of understanding Lovecraft, each one more complex than the previous. Ive seen documentaries about his life and read a lot of his letters and a lot of his fans works. I humbly declare myself a Lovecraft amateur expert.

I hated bloodborne and didnt even ONCE (1) I felt that it conveyed properly the works and ideas of Lovecraft. Furthermore I do believe that anyone who claims it is a Lovecraftian game is familiar with Lovecraft very little and has only read a few short stories and knows more about the pop culture behind the man than his actual body of work.

Lovecrafts cosnic horror ultimately boils down to that which we cannot understand which in itself is a pretty weak plotdriver but as stories go on and lore amounts itswlf and you see the bigger picture you understand that the true horror isn't that an alien might catch you in a swamp or a book might turn you insane, the true horror is that there are things that no matter how much you look at it and think them trough you wont understand but they will still be there and that is frightening just from a philosophical perspective. Reason is the only thing human kind has going for him and to think that even that won't be enough to face tge entire universe is bonechilling. Is like depending all your life on a gun and at the most crucial point you ran out of ammo.
Lovecraft felt and knew this and he made the unexplainable understandable, he made clear tat which cannot be clear.
Bloodborne has none of that. Bloodborne has the aesthetics. The cosmic monsters and the weird scifi that lovecraft horror (d)evolved into as time went by. It has mysteries of the unknown* (*the unknown is later explained in some form or another). It has disgusting things and ennerving creatures. But it has not what cosmic horror is all about.
Someone said Darkest Dungeon was a good Lovecraftian game and that is a far better answer than bloodborne. DD ending perfectly encapsulates Lovecrafts ultimate idea o despair. Bloodborne might be a good game, an artsy game, a great atmosphere game but it isn't a Lovecraftian game anymore than a @EpicCthulhu Twitter account is a lovecraftian person.

He died in his mid life before anything could truly be made of it, his biggest contributors were two friends that made their own publishing company for his material. He was raised as a social outcast, never even schooled properly, and his mother even told everyone he was disfigured. It was more of a case of a misguided youth.

It's hard to pull off a Lovecraftian game because Lovecraft relies on having the readers in the dark about the nature of horrors. Video games are hugely a visual medium and that alone clashes with the themes of Lovecraftian horror.
Imagination is key and yet AAA developers leave little to nothing for the imagination.

Lovecraft didn't rip off other authors, he shared notes between penpals and they all worked off eachother and even helped eachother out.

alright so i'm the anon that made this post and i'm back. after i posted that i looked up prehistoric dogs to see if their was anything like that in history and there were. like the 1 ton andrewsarchus (pic related) and some other things like the mesonyx, hyaenodon. and sarkastodon. too bad they didn't really leave any direct descendants but it's the closest I can find to big dogs like modern big cats.
