I got to where the world really ended and you are in a big maze. Quit around there mostly because I was playing on the mobile version and at that point I really started to get annoyed with the touch controls.

I think it has a lot of cool things about it, but it's just a slog to play and what it does well doesn't make up for all of its problems. It was such a slog that I haven't played any SMT games since I played it a couple of months back, it killed my enthusiasm. I don't consider it a bad game, and I would love a remake because there are some things about I love and I would love to see those things in a better game, but as it is, it's not the best time in my opinion.

It's a neat game, actually the only MegaTen game I've played.

I liked the vibe and the setting a lot, even if the plot itself is pretty barebones. Wasn't really fond of how demon fusion worked, a lot of the time the outcomes felt arbitrary, but the actual idea of a monster collection RPG a bit darker than the likes of Pokemon and Dragon Quest is still novel. Tons of cool set pieces and twists though, especially the endgame where both the Law Hero and Chaos Hero turn against you in the neutral route caught me by surprise and definitely made the last dungeon more interesting than it would have been otherwise.

My biggest criticism is the encounter rate. The games simply too long and labyrinthine to get away with an encounter rate that high, and I'm the kind of guy who enjoys playing Dragon Quest 1. The only reason I was able to tolerate it was because I could play the game at twice the speed on an emulator to plow through the basic encounters.

I couldn't get myself to finish it but I thought the game had a great atmosphere and music. The encounter rate is insane and will make you fight 2 or 3 times in a row against lots of enemies every few steps, I shamelessly sprayed everything to death with tranquilizing ammo. Lost interest and dropped the game after Alice, kind of want to go back and finish it though.

Really cool, especially if you put yourself in the mindset of when the game came out. It bucks a lot of RPG conventions with setting, plot, and gameplay for sure.

Taking place in modern Tokyo's unique, and the beginning is a more grounded approach that ramps up to the full on apocalypse you deal with later on. It's a pretty proper catastrophe where you get to see a before and after that's really different, like FF6's World of Ruin they do later.

As for gameplay, having your human party members come and go and just eventually leave outright is a bit different from the usual. Same for how post-timeskip, your money completely loses all value.

I hate how Nocturne feels in terms of running around, I hate random battles on top of that and the non existent story. Are the SMT's on 3DS any better in terms of exploration / navigation and story / characters? Nocturne feels too janky and just lacks anything to keep me going.

Nocturne has no story and the story it tells and the characters involved aren't very good. Play II if you want something resembling a plot and characters. IV and Final are mostly enjoyable if you have actually play I and II and understand what this series is about. SJ and I also don't really have a reslly focused narrative

Playing IV for the first time, just got to Tokyo. I have heard the game changes a lot from this point, anyone mind explaining what people mean? Been liking it so far, difficulty is good. Minotaur gave me a good run for my money, even with a magic build to exploit bufu he fucked me up a few times. Medusa was a bit easier though.
