Is story essential for a video game to be good?

no
>>
definitely
no game can be at least good without some kickass story
>>
>>385977942
Depends what kind of game it is. RPGs rely on narrative because it's a story-driven game. Dialogue is crucial. Other games just have plot as a simple foil, like competitive games or action-y games.
>>
>>385977942
No. However, story can make a bad game good.

No.

Only for RPGs.
>>
Depends, Tetris won't be improved by a story, but most games will.
>>
>>385977942
Yes.
>>
>>385977942
No.
>>
no.
but games can be enjoyed by the story only.
>>
Games reliant on a story are pure trash. Every single one, without fail, is either a boring grindathon, a visual novel, or a casual pushover that can be beaten with button mashing.
>>
If it's a story driven game then it matters, but if it's a gameplay driven game, then it does not matter.

For example, do you need a reason for Dante to go off and kill demons? In DMC4, he's just there for the hell of it and nobody cares because it's badass.

But if you play a JRPG with extended dialogue scenes, you really have to care or else it's a load of bullshit.
>>
Games with no story at all are tech demos or puzzle games. Games with little story are usually the best since they mainly focus on gameplay. Games with very heavy stories are usually boring or have no replay value since they don't focus on gameplay.

Only correct post in this thread, the best games ever made don't rely heavily on stories as it should be
>>
>>385977942
In an RPG usually

Most storylines in the 90's were shit but some great games came about

Pleb.
>>
>>385977942
No, but story can enhance the fuck out of a game, that's for sure
>>
>>385977942
Mechanics ARE story
Every action you take is part of a greater narrative
>>
Depends on the setting.
>>
No, but a story can make a game better as long as it is non intrusive

Why? Why would you come here and ask something so stupid? Something that you know the answer to?
What is your goal?
>>
>>385977942

No, but it's nice window dressing if it's gonna be there. It should never be more than just window dressing, though.

I just wanted an excuse to post that gif again
>>
>>385980980
If I was to get nitpicky I could say that graphics aren't essential at all when text based games exist and when there are completely blind players.

I would say that the only truly essential component is a base level of interactivity and cause-and-effect.
>>
>>385981235
Text is graphics.

Graphics is anything visually displayed by the electronic video system on which the game is being played.
>>
>>385981307
Ok, even then there are still blind people that have fun (somehow) playing with no visual input.

>blind people are actually playing audio games
>>
>>385981508
Which doesn't make it not a video game.

In order for something to be a video game, it needs gameplay and graphics. That makes these two things objectively the essential components of a video game. If it does not have video but it has gameplay it is just a game. If does have video but not gameplay then it is just a movie. In order to be a video game it has to have graphics and gameplay.

If it also has sound then that is one more layer of interaction, but if it only has sound and gameplay it is not a video game, it is an audio game. The fact that some videogames have enough audio cues to be able to play them blind doesn't negate this.

Which is the best kind of correct.
