They had to come up with anything.
Truth is that in W1 at first you were supposed to play as custom witcher and then as Berengar. Whole plot was already written (without Ciri and Yen), this is why Triss was shoved in and was a shitty Yennefer clone. Only later they decided they want Geralt after all but the story and characters were already made.
This is the only reason why Triss is in 2 games instead of Yen.
