I don't like Nintendo in general but that's a pretty bad comparison.

The mainline Mario games 64, sunshine, galaxy 1+2 and 3d world are all quite different from one another whereas chess is exactly the same thing.

Even the spin offs like Mario Kart add some new features like new items, anti gravity, gliders etc even though they are practically the same games.
