Nowadays, your game must be a literal gem with features unlike any other if you want to make it with a metroidvania.
Think La Mulana or Ori/Hollow knight.
I also used to defend Axiom Verge. Looking back, it's such a blatant rip-off that I feel embarassed about it.

I'll still play a good Metroidvania any day of the week. It's a good go-to genre for indies, one that allows them to concentrate their level design and manage character progression.

So yeah, a Guacamelee or Hollow Knight, or some of the lesser ones like Seraph or Shrouded In Sanity, I'll play one of those any day of the week.

Axiom Verge, this, or any of the "Literally just Castlevania/Super Metroid" games? Yeah that's not worth it. I've already played Super Metroid, and you're not going to out-Super Metroid Super Metroid.

Axiom Verge isn't a bad game, it just lacks direction. The developer doesn't know how to make a cohesive map that lets you naturally want to explore, instead opting for really complicated level design that requires intensive amounts of backtracking and looking for miniscule elements.

I think Hollow Knight did this better, wherein your progression was gradual and it was subtle about where you could and couldn't go.

Well that's a good summary. Not amazing, but a nice mish-mash anyhow.

The main thing is that it's built around a single checkpoint, so the loops within loops on the level design that allow you to hit up any of the bosses in any order you want, sequence breaking to your hearts content, and that's easily the best part.

The worst is that yeah, doesn't look great. Some enemies have fuck-all in telegraphs, getting to the secret bosses requires you to die over and over, stamina regen is a bitch, etc. "Play as a boss" and the boss rush modes are aight.

When low-res pixel games were made it wasn't a "stylistic choice"--it was the best option they had available at the time.

If you're going to make an uninspired sprite game in 2017, at least put some effort into it. Make it look, y'know, good.

This nostalgia cash-in crap is already on its last legs. Eventually "remember when games looked like shit?" isn't going to reach many people.
