So every time a movie is supposed to be played the game crashes. Like if I disable the intro videos from the launcher it starts up fine but then crashes anyway after the two cannons fire. I remember there was a similar issue with the TiTs games but I don't remember how to fix it.

Bit of both, its a sequel in the game world and there's are references to other stuff that's going on, that being said the first cold steel game is mostly self contained, There are still a bunch of references and thing you would enjoy more if you played the earlier games however. In the 2nd one there's more overlap with the epilogue having you control previous MC's and in the third a bunch of characters from all over are coming back.

To be fair there's plenty of genki girls like Estelle, engineer lolis like Tita, overgrown 13 year olds like Agate, and collected martial artist Easterners like Zin. Save for the adults and Rean, Cold Steel's characters (Class 7, mostly) just don't do anything overly bombastic or have crazy revelations like Sky's do.

They have much more mundane backstories, but they still have more backstory even if it's not nearly as hectic as having your village attacked and sister killed, or being the princess all along.

Jusis, Fie, Elliot (even if he's dull), Machias and Alisa get a good amount of backstory and interaction (Crow's strong suit) with other NPCs at Thors for their development in the first game. Way too many great side characters are in CS for me to just write it off because I played the Sky trilogy.
