The paradigm system is the only thing that gives you a sense of control and similar systems have been done before and better. Regardless, it doesn't require more thought that "Do I need to debuff, self buff, heal, attack, or defend". Even then, you swap paradigms every second attack chain to gain a full attack chain with the new paradigm you select.

As to commands, manually queuing your attacks takes significantly longer to input than selecting auto. In a game with realtime combat it means you are actually punished for selecting your own commands.

I will give you graphics, they are still pretty decent. Lightning's skin textures are really the only serious weak point.

Plot, you are going to prop up a plot that has this disparate group come together under threat of death, a lazy trope, and call it beautiful? It's average at best. The fact they go through half the game saying "We aren't going to kill orphan" only to say "Let's kill Orphan!" should clue you that the writing isn't that great. Also the fact that the only character advancement lightning has is half-heartedly accepting Snow.

I'm not going to even get in to the clusterfuck that is the PC release...

It really isn't as bad as people say. To my own surprise as well.
I personally picked it up for dirt cheap just a few years ago, despite having heard all sorts of shit about it.

The BEGINNING really didn't even try to prove all the bad claims about it wrong, but luckily, to my own surprise as well, the more I played, the more entertaining and hooking it became. It's not GOTYAY or best JRPG ever in any sense, but it's FAR from the "worst crap ever" -category. A solid 7/10 experience IMO.

The sequels fixed, expanded and improved many things, especially pacing and gameplay. Up to you whether you like the direction they went with the plot and cast, but they're not hideous either. I found especially LR to be total blast, easily my 2014's GOTY. The 13-2 was simply fun, easily 8/10 at least.

Gambits are in a way an over complicated Paradigm system. The plot is "fight back against the evil empire and Basch's evil twin brother". The music isn't anywhere near as good as it is in XIII. And in XIII you can actually obtain the best weapons in game without having to farm some ridiculous invisible chest with a 1/100 chance in spawning and a 1/100 chance for the weapon to appear in the damn chest.

I bet most people who claim that you can just autobattle every fight and win never played late game XIII, or XIII-2 for that matter.

XIII-2 had some massive difficulty spikes, and could tear you a new one if you didn't actively choose your paradigmss at the right time.
