very menu heavy for a real time RPG but definitely worth it.

toy around with keywords, always clear every dungeon portal (and use whatever cheap item it is that reveals all portals on the floor all the time). try and get a decent mix of physical and magic attacks as well as spare equipment for more spell swapping.

Reminder that along with a list of QoL improvements that make .hack//GU a lot less tedious, they're making a vol.4 for the GU remaster.

IMOQ is -super- dated, but they story and character are great. And there's so much side content. This is a game that will give you as much as you put into it, and I mean that. It's so incredibly immersive the level of detail that was put into this simulated online experience, that you can really treat it like a real MMO and come away feeling that same satisfaction as the good ol' days.

Combat hasn't aged well. But everything else in the game makes it totally worthwhile to play.

I don't think anyone prefers IMOQ over GU because of the combat or even the general gameplay. It's more to do with the style of MMO simulation (desktop, forums, news) that they prefer or the story/characters. Personally I like kite a hell of a lot more than Haseo. I'm a sucker for the pure innocent protagonist who is dutifully committed to a near impossible task. Kite's best moments are when he shows hard-boiled determination despite being just a simple schoolboy.

Premium edition, btw. Seems that Returner is still part of the canon (wtf are they going to do?), and you can see the offline appearance of several characters. Atoli and Haseo have the same designs as in G.U+, and Alkaid and Endrance are cute.

You don't need to watch Roots, in fact I recommend not to. I love SIGN although some people considered it to be boring. The anime version of Legend of the Twilight is shit and not canon (the canon version is the manga), and Quantum is the best anime of the series, but you will need to have knowledge of the series to understand certain aspect.

You're gonna spend a lot of time opening menus during combat to select your skills, so don't think of it as a fully ARPG, because with all those menus it plays a lot like standard RPGs.

Also, ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, bring at least 1 wizard and 1 physycal damage guy with you, because there are some dungeons full of enemies that are resistant to either physical or magical damage, so if, for example, you stumbe across a dungeon with enemies that are resistant to physical damage, and you have no magic, you're gonna have a really shit time.

The game is flawed, but has redeeming qualities. You might like it, but it's not for everyone.

Alright OP here's what you gotta do
Go watch SIGN, it doesnt have to be right now and you can just watch it while you play but it ties into the over arching plot and characters from that show appear in the game, finish it before you finish the first game
Also you need to watch LIMINALITY, it's 4 episodes, watch 1 episode per game, also get the code words from the episodes that will take you to some dungeons with special gear, you should watch an episode before you start the game it matches with
Then after you play IMOQ and if you want to keep going with the series watch ROOTS before you play GU, it's the prequel and directly leads into the games
Skip legend of the twilight, it's non canon

While I loved the games, they were admittedly a bit grindy with looking for virus cores and shit.
For the love of god, always keep stocked up on items. Read the message boards in-game, trade with NPC characters wandering around town, and use plenty of skills.

Get into trading early, equip your sidekicks with good weapons with buffs. Find that one magic item that lets you cast the haste buff.

Game can be a bit challenging however you'll find it's pretty easy to exploit, you can also powerlevel pretty easy by using elemental weaknesses agaisnt high level monsters in high level areas.

If we never get a true MMO based on the World, I think it'd be pretty cool if they just made a single player Sim/RPG based in the world where you can acquire NPCs as your party members and run your own guild. Just completely dismiss the serious side of the story such as viruses and make it an immersive single player game simulating an MMO. When you meet Mistral, trade for her Sotetsu blades as soon as possible. They're going to be the most useful twin swords available to you for a good half of the game.

Data Drain often. I can't stress this enough. Generally, you should probably Data Drain at least every new type of enemy you come across. Also, probably Data Drain whenever your Infection rate is at 0%. This will assure that you'll have most of the Virus Cores that you need.

i'm probably one of few that prefer IMOQ over GU. GU was tediously loading battle screens every time you fought an enemy. spells got nerfed so hard that they're absolutely not worth using, especially the fucking cures. whereas in IMOQ you're free to run away or fight as you see fit without ever needing a loading screen to transition between fights. not to mention the buttery smooth transition the music makes from free roam to fighting.

dungeons were even made more tedious if you wanted to S rank shit. fuck chim chims. however i did like that the entire floor was explorable instead of that room simulator shit IMOQ did.

I honestly remember being disappointed with Carmina Gadelica. My first exposure to .hack was .hack//SIGN. There, the towns were huge and more impressive-looking than what we got in the games. In SIGN, Carmina Gadelica was a bustling, European-inspired city. In the game, it's just this walled off series of hallways.
