I can't really find sources, but in CS1, you were intended to go to Ymir after chapter 6, but they weren't going to be able to fit an extra chapter with the vita version, so they had to scrap it and made a drama cd of the trip instead. AFAIK there is still some Ymir assets in the game that people dug up, including the outdoor village part of it.

For CS2, I remember reading a jp article about the director, or one of the lead members on the team, say that they had planned to flesh out a lot more of Western Erebonia, but had to scrap it all when they weren't going to be able to fit it on the Vita.

No. Cold Steel 1 is really bad, just about the only place it's decent is music.

The main character of Cold Steel is ripped straight out of Sword Art Online, he's a blank slate type of character meant for the player to self-insert into, with no personality, that nevertheless has a whole harem of girls after him. On top of that he's also the strongest member of the group and solves all of their problems. This has a knock on effect, as the other characters all play second fiddle to him and don't actually do anything if he isn't around.

Next, the combat. They severely dumbed down the combat from previous games, apparently in an attempt to target a younger audience. Falcom removed the sepith count mechanic and replaced it with nothing, allowing you to stack damage and 1-shot bosses. They also decreased the difficulty such that normal mode from Sky is the equivalent of Nightmare mode in Cold Steel, with any difficulty below that being mash x to win.

Finally the plot, I'll keep it spoiler free and just say that the plot of Cold Steel is largely meandering and does nothing to advance the story or shed light on the setting. All in all, it's a very disappointing game.

It would be a decent pickup at $5-10 but $40 is highway robbery.

Here's some info tidbit that I wanted to get into the final article but ran out of time:
all builds of the game (Steam, humble, GoG) are the exact same executable. This means they are all DRM-free.

The game dynamically connects to those platforms (Steam, GoG galaxy) that are present and where you own the game. If none are present, it simply runs in DRM-free mode. (As a side effect, this also means that if you were to buy the game on both Steam and GoG, you could unlock achievements on both simultaneously with the same build :P)

I won't buy it because I already played it on PS3 and I'm not paying $40 for some extra scenes, but I hope Steamfriends enjoy it; they're both good RPGs that will keep you entertained for a long time.
