As a lorefag, there was nothing wrong with that, you are just letting your personal feelings for him as a character get in the way of your judgement.

Killing off the rookie allowed him to be useful narratively and show up one last time. It prevented him from becoming an S4, which would ruin what makes him cool. Killing up doesn't close off any narrative threads or story oppunirities, either, and they can always make more stories about him as an ODST from the past.

Finally, killing a character off like a bitch is the norm for halo and empahsis it's core theme of war being shitty and sacrifices needing to be made (you know, like abducting innocent kids for the S2 program, or the forerunners using the halo array to kill the flood, or the prophets hiding the truth about humans from the covenant to keep it intact, or ONI in general, etc)

No. I'm a writer, and I'll tell you what happened.

New writers happened, shitty ones at that. Whenever a shitty writer picks up a franchise, the following happens:
- He doesn't get what the franchise is about. He doesn't get the rules that have been set up, he doesn't know that some things are taboo, that some long-running secrets are no to be revealed too lightly, he doesn't get the roles of the different characters, the eternal sidekicks that can never die, the expendable characters that are mostly irrelevant... and he accidentally rapes the franchise without even realizing it.
- He gets full well what the franchise is about, and everything it implies. Vut because he is a cheap writer, unable to write anything good, all he can do is destroy everything that was established before, because it's all so well-written, he thinks it'll cause emotional response to go against everything it stands for, just so he can earn his "Wow that writer really shook things up!" badge.
- He doesn't care about the franchise and just wants to write his own shit. bBt he's stuck with that, so he'll destroy all of it and turn it into his own franchise, killing all the characters to introduce his own, ending all the storylines to push his.

Why did they have to ever mention the Rookie again? I don't fucking know. He was a hollow character designed specifically for the player to fill in his boots, something quite singular by itself and almost limited to video games. If they had to mention the Rookie again, they'd have to make him playable in a game, because it makes no sense for him to exist outside of a playable character in a video game.

Afaik, he was just mentioned to be dead. He didn't show up, nor played any role, he wasn't important enough his death mattered. It was just stupid and showed whoever wrote this is a cheap writer that didn't get it.
