It also happens in reverse, if a game had a good sequel then the previous iteration gets shit on. Fallout 3 when it was released was pretty amazing for its time considering that in 2008 classic RPG style dialogue and character creation was dead and games entered the cinematic movie era with much more focus on cutscenes. After FNV's release F3 was trashed beyond repair because its freedom seemed to pale in direct comparison to FNV.
