Yeah SNES or GBC. Be warned with 2 SNES translations they have some bugs which I don't think have been fixed, but it's also been like two years since I played it.

I tried 6 but even with 400% emulator speed I realized this game is just a huge grindfest and a waste of time

i could be playing any MMO and feel that the grind is worth more especially since the mechanics aren't especially deep

I hear 2 on GBC fixes the level curve so that you don't spend hours grinding. Also as people have said the SNES translations still have some bugs. The worst one I found was in 2, where you'll get stuck and have to reset if you talk to an NPC in the shrine after beating the last boss.

I'm playing the mobile version of IV since it's the only intact version of the remake. The menu navigation is nice, but the movement controls are total ass and I'd advise you to play it on DS if you don't care about party chat. I expect the other games are similar.
