In Man of Steel, Superman doesn't save anyone, instead he goes on a rampage fighting General Zodd and his cronies and devastates smallville and metropolis in the crossfire. It is understandable that there would be collateral damage, but the problem is that at no point you get that scene where Superman tries to save someone, or saves someone.

As a comparison, Age of Ultron(another terrible movie) has a couple of scenes where Captain America is all "we have to save the people first!" and you get a couple of scenes with him and Thor saving a family in a car or something, i don't even remember.

Plotwise, if it's traditional superman, we know what to expect so he can't surprise us. Plus he's meant to be op so the most memorable stories avoid being about one on one confrontation and more about him making a decision. Yet, its superman so even when he has to decide between one or the other, he finds a way to get both.
