Nier and especially Automata have strong yet quite subtle love stories that manage to hit right in the feels during crucial moments of the story.

I actually agree, not because of abhorrent Rinoa/Squall which is some of the worst "romances" i've seen in games, but because of Laguna/Raine.
Honestly whole game should've been around Laguna and his journey around the war-torn world as a journalist, preferably with no stupid shit like sorceresses. This theme is incredibly rare in games, and his relationships with a mature, believable woman are a breath of fresh air as far as JRPG love stories go.
