It served to bring Trevor and Sypha together, by extension have Trevor find his determination to go stop Dracula, and gave Dracula more of a motivatino beyond just "Im evil." which is also canon as shown in SoTN. By the end of the season the corrupt elements that were present (bishop, thugs masquerading as priests) have been removed and the church is no longer needed for the story in the following season two.

Almost like exactly one thing would happen at a time. I think anime might be the same way, but they hide it by adding moving backgrounds or other action in the scene.
