So much this. I mean I get ps3s werent powerful enough for ps2 software emulation to a standard sony would support, third party software says otherwise but lets say thats true. Why the fuck does ps4, which as a ps2 emulator on it, make me rebuy fucking games? xbone already has free emulation of 360 discs and now has xbox hueg emulation. Eat a dick sony.

> I've also never seen that cord in the pic in my entire life so never had to deal with that shit.
It's a component cable, for using on early HDTVs that did not support HDMI, it's how I have my ps2 hooked up. Obviously not necessary if he is using HDMI though, hence why they dont care that it covers the hdmi port.

on OG 360? probably just overhang, the cable is large and early early Xbox 360 models didnt support hdmi, so they didnt design the cable with the worry of blocking an hdmi port.
On the slim, TOSLINK is not on the cable, but on the xbox itself, so there is no reason not to do so. Probably to prevent retards keep both plugged in I guess?

As much as I enjoyed my XBOX 360, it was also my least favorite console. I played COUNTLESS hours of Call of Duty 4 with my buddies. A fuck ton of Armored Core 4, For Answer, V, and V Verdict Day.

Its DVD drive died and refused to open without being pried open with a butter knife. It eventually completely died and Microsoft said "lol too bad so sad, buy our new 360 Slim model"

That was when I built a PC and never looked bad. I only recently bought a PS4 Pro. Leaps an bounds better. 360 controller is still absolute best controller for PC though.

It was mostly to gyp people who wanted to use their HDTVs and use headsets with game audio. Most of the headsets that I've seen for 360 needed the red and white from the AV to get game audio, and the standard MS AV cable deliberately blocks the HDMI with extraneous plastic.
To use both, Microsoft wanted people to buy pic related, but if you weren't an idiot, you could just pry the pointless half of the AV cable's plastic casing and just use the normal fucking wire.

Are you me, OP? I worked at a vidya store that gen and everyone I worked with didn't like the 360. Some games it had were fun but the hardware itself was the biggest pain in the ass. To add to your list

>power bricks with different designs for plugs so we'd just have to tell customers to bring their console in lest they waste two trips to get the correct one
>horrendous failure rate in early models
>hard to buff circular scratches from bumping the system
>discs so cheaply made it wasn't uncommon to see them cracked (seriously, it outnumbered every other system we'd see and I personally had games crack after babying them)
>even slim ones had shoddy Wi-Fi that would shit out or work half of the time

I had two systems RRoD and a fan with the Wi-Fi went out on my slim. My 60gb PS3 didn't shit out until years later and I've been using a slim ever since with no issues.

>Then you autistically shrieked about how the OP should use the TOSLINK he never said he had.
I think you might legitimately be retarded.
the argument was, at least to my knowledge, was that the optical connection was on the back of the av connector, which blocked the HDMI port. And that some people had old receivers or speaker setups that did not support HDMI, admitedly this was me until like 2010. So I used the setup I pointed out.
AV cables are an analog connection. There is literally no reason to use stereo red and white cables if you are using HDMI at all, your tv, or monitor or whatever is better off taking an HDMI signal 100x over, and there is no reason to a DAC if you are taking in an analog connection, there is literally no scenario where you should use stereo cables.

With all the mentioning of laser death it makes me realize that even with switching of parts eventually all my laser using consoles will die off and if generic parts aren't being made they'll be perma dead.

Out of all the consoles I've had since I was a kid, Dreamcast barely plays any games, PS1 suffers atrocious load times till it eventually locks up and can't read the cd, SEGA CD still plays games fine but has longer load times, PS2 is still chugging along but I can tell its laser has slightly weakened. At least with the older consoles you can resolder places where cheap glue dries up or there was bad quality control. Anything past that generation and you're looking at buying an extra console or replacing the entire part which is much more pricey with the latter being unavailable for quite a few of them.
>>
>>385854686
i'm the exact opposite. my slim 60gb shat itself after 2 years and i had to buy a slim to replace it. my 08 hdmi 360 is still running perfectly to this day. the only problem i've had with it was the disk drive needed oiling because some gunk got stuck in the eject mechanism and it would stick sometimes. i've had the same issue with my pc drive but it's an easy fix. i still play my 360 now actually, but haven't used my slim for gaming in about 3 years. it's a blu ray player for me now.
>>

This, almost every single console used proprietary connections. Want component out on a Gamecube? Better shell out $100. If you don't want to get jewed why the fuck are you buying a console? Sony literally disabled installing Linux on their console in a firmware update despite promising you'd be able too, console companies don't give a shit about you.
>>
>>385854427
they didn't. as I explained earlier the cable was designed before xbox 360 had HDMI support and had TOSLINK component and composite on it, so the size wasn't unreasonable. Later xbox 360 models such as the slim, had TOSLINK on the xbox itself, so it was not needed anyway.
I highly doubt microsoft made much money on such a niche adapter.

Now BFME is not a great game or anything, but I tried 3 different BFME discs in the console and it wouldn't read any of them. I was like nope fuck that, what if it has this issue with games I actually want to play.
I got a black 360 (not the slim, the OG model but black) and kept it for years with no issues though

eventually all dreamcast gd-rom drives will become unplayable. they don't make the technology anymore and any that are still remaining are failing left and right, especially if people play pirated CD-R's on them.

luckily, there's a SD card mod out there for Dreamcast that lets you boot games from it. so the console will never truly die out.

The cable was still being packaged and sold with 360s long after they had HDMI support and again, having to buy TOSLINK just to get around them blocking the port instead of Microsoft replacing their bulky shit cable is unfuckingreasonable.
Doing it AGAIN in a much more deliberate way with the slim model 'just because' is a load of shit. There are people that could have made use of the two ports at once and Microsoft chose to say 'too bad, look for other solutions'.
>>
>>385854685
That HDMI was made in 2003 and the X360 in 2005. Microsoft was still unsure of the then unproven display technology so using their proprietary cables and proven technology was what they chose to do.Besides it would be a few years until HD via analog via component would be phased out in favor of purely digital HD. You have to look at the timeframe to see what MS was doing. The fact that you can output digital video AND analogue audio at the same time on a PS3 via different cables is still pretty amazing to this day.

What? using toslink is the reason you needed the port anon, it was on the back of the cable. The fuck do you need component for if you are using hdmi?

Slim model actually fixed the issue, they put toslink on the xbox itself. this is obvious bait at this point. Hence it not being deliberate, because they fixed the issue with slim.

You plug your HDMI from your console into your receiver then you plug your receiver into your TV with a second HDMI cable. The receiver will get the full digital audio signal and pass the video out to the TV. It's not fucking hard people.

Unlikely if you have a modern motherboard desu, unless you are using a proper modern DAC, even then Id say it only makes a difference with music.
But you are missing the point anon. They are talking about RCA cables. if you are not using toslink, usb, hdmi, (or in your case pcie.) You objectively arent making a difference. RCA is an analog signal, your soundcard handles digital to analog conversion, presumably at a high quality with good audio reproduction, if you input an analog source it cant do anything but make it louder. it would be pointless.

Not him, and I know you're trolling, but I'm going to respond anyway. I have a ps3 and play it on my ASUS VG248QE a 1080p monitor that has a 144hz refresh rate. There is a shitload of screentearing on the system because of the high refresh rate of the TV, something that does not occur when playing it on my SD-CRT. It's painfully obvious that the PS3 maxes out at about 65ish~Hz, if that. Thus his assertion is correct, Video Game and Home Media Consoles are designed to be played on a stock Television, not even on a low class hi Hz monitor.

You're kind of missing the point. The issue was that the 360 forces you go buy something new. Whether it's the converter to use both cables or a receiver or a TOSLINK, none of it should be required because the 360 artificially blocked you with a big piece of plastic to try and force you to buy more components from them when you already had all the pieces that you needed.

You realize that "game mode" on TVs and how regular monitors work is basically the same thing? A monitor displays the input as is, it doesn't change it at all. no it doesn't. as has been shown in this thread already, you can just slide off the plastic casing on the vga cable and use both hdmi and the vga sound at the same time. i used to use it all the time when i was a poorfag and had a shitty 2006 square monitor. if they were trying to force you to use another cable then they'd have some kind of software detector implemented into the xbox os which detects if you're using the av adapter or a vga cable, but they didn't.

HDMI does carry sound, yes.

BUT, most of us would prefer to output sound through optical fiber, which is much better quality, to out home AV receivers.

For build quality, it was the 360.

I babied that thing and I still went through 3 in 18 months due to red ring, since the ones they sent in replacement were just refurbs with a higher tendency to failure. Let alone that most games it had that were worthwhile and exclusive DEMANDED online play to make them worthwhile, so on top of being both a faulty piece of crap and demanding an annual fee to keep your games as good as they need to be, nope. Stopped buying games for it after the second one went.

Also had my power brick die randomly on it, and they made me pay shipping cost to warranty repair that. Took them a month to get a new one out.

Worst in terms of playtime
My wii u and xbone are pretty close here.
Wii u just didn't have anything I really felt was compelling or even worth playing over some of their older franchise entries, xbone became pointless next to my pc by eliminating exclusivity.

>Using legacy technology like AV cables and then bitching about HDMI

The computer monitor I use for my PS2 doesn't have AV slots, so you know what I did? I went to the local Walmart and bought an AV to HDMI converter and moved on with my life. I didn't go bitch on 4chan about how Sony is trying to fuck with me because I had to go buy and extra piece of equipment for a console that was made before HD became a standard thing.

Hell, when the 360 came out with its second generation console, there were still TVs on the market that only went up to 720p and 1080i was still a thing.

OP is just a faggoty ass troll that got you all, including me, to bitch to each other about nonsense. With a company like Microsoft telling its own consumerbase to just fuck off with "Use the 360 if you can't have a solid internet connection to use XB1" I doubt they'd giver a shit about the one or two fringe cases of people actually needing both the HDMI slot and the AV slot at the same time enough to try and milk them with an extra cable. The amount of money going into trying to make the cables and sell them probably costs more than the amount of money they made off people who are in these fringe cases.

open the disk driver case and lube things up. seems theres a gear that rewinds a bit too far and stops the tray from opening too. might need to push that a bit as well

..theres also a small magnet in the upper part of the driver case thats used to lock the disk is place by pushing a plastic holder thingy, i snapped that shit in half and it helped too by making things easier on the gears

the HDD the system shipped with was also only 5400RPM.
With the size they were, both 360 and PS3 should have just thrown in a proper 5.25" drives. Bigger, cheaper, faster. Good tradeoff.
But no, let's stick with laptop drives instead, yeah.

MGS4 wasn't the only example of miserable load and wait times though. The whole system is full of them.

Well there where 7200RPM drives for 2.5 back then as well.
The 5400RPM is still faster at transferring data than the BD 2x.

Though on the system part, did anyone else with a PS3 have the problem that every 20 file or so was super slow.
Like transferring 100 images.
First 19 files went super fast, 20th file took ages, then it did the same at 39th file and 40th file.

I've had issues with a bunch of my consoles. NES stopped reading carts and just shows a flashing screen, Genesis was fried by a rented 32X, PS1 disc spindle broke off, I had several PS2s with disc read error bullshit, and three separate 360s RRODed on me (and my current one makes a loud buzzing).

That bring said, I had tons of fun with all of them so they definitely aren't the worst. That award goes to my Saturn and Xbone. Both had nearly zero in the way of worthwhile exclusives and multiplats all play better elsewhere. Huge mistakes, both of them.

I disagree whole heartedly this gen is the best since gba, if not ever the last gen went through the whole awkward early 3d bullshit all over again. Psp and ds are criminally over rated. Vita is finally prime 3d with tonnes of amazing weeb games released to this day, it doesn't even pretend to give a shit about normies. And 3ds has great games as well probably from nintendo ignoring wii U. Switch looks even better than both and as a handheldfag it is truly a time to be alive.

If I put the cable into the recording slot and "Listen to this device" after removing the headphones it plays both sounds through my speakers instead of my quiet monitor.
>>
>>385863287
>early 3d bullshit
DS was never made by its 3D games although some of them like Kingdom Hearts were just fine for being well executed.
PSP didn't have any real trouble with it since it was about as good as Dreamcast.
More importantly both systems had larger library with bigger budgets than their 8th gen representatives thanks to better sales and it just shows with the quality of games and their design.
Wipeout Pulse is better than 2048 and the high aesthetics work better on portable title than trying to make it more gritty looking.

PSP was god awful at 3d, between awkward physics and graphics and having only 1 lousy stick. It was great for the time due to multimedia features, psx compatibility and being hacked to shit with emulators. But the onlt psp games that were really decent were srpgs and 2d shit.
>>
>>385864273
All that was for was copying saves between a PS1/2 memory card and the PS3's HDD. You didn't need it if you were just playing PS1/2 games on PS3, just copy the save to USB stick and plug it into another PS3 and bam there you go.

There's something very nostalgic about memory cards. They just feel so unique and strange, especially before I knew that you could accomplish the same thing with a memory stick that had a more generalized use case.

There's some kind of magic that's been lost about the fact that you can hold all your progress -- your sum total of efforts in your video games -- in one single, solid-state card that you can insert and remove from a special slot in your console that gives a very satisfying *thunk* whenever you do so.

Early 7th gen was terrible though from a hardware standpoint. Original 360 had no HDMI, only component, and no wifi. You had to pay 90 burgers for the wifi adapter. Not to mention the RRoD. then PS3 comes out and is expensive and has no games for years with a slow as hell bluray player. Then of course there's overheating issues as well. Then there's the Wii, which was an overclocked Gamecube and kickstarted the motion control meme which led to normies flooding stores and buying shovelware games. The worst part is it was the transition from CRT's to early LCD's which meant massive input lag and terrible upscaling. It was a pretty chaotic time, early adopters got fucked.

It's kind of sad since the reason Microsoft wanted HDDVD so bad was because it would be just as compatible with PC's as regular DVDs were. Blurays was a mess of DRM and didn't have proper drives for ages while being way too expensive. RW drives are STILL overpriced. The success of Bluray was part of the reason physical media died on PC, and ironically it basically killed optical media in general seeing as how many people refuse to upgrade from DVD. 4k Bluray is following the same trend, being overpriced and having too much DRM, Sony is too worried about sucking Hollywood's cock to care whether it will actually sell or not. PS4 Pro not having 4k BR only confirms that it's DOA.

That shit came with my console. Never used it and it's just collecting dust.

I was thinking more on the lines of 80's chevy being the 360 and ps3 being a 3rd gen prius. But yes, I haven't used consoles in 3-4years.

Why do sonygros always start anti-xbox threads here? They know there aren't almost any xboners in here at all.

Back when PS3 had nogaems, the 360 was great, but after actual games came out for the PS3, the PS3 was easily the better console.

The PS3 exclusives were so much better.

Post S-Video televisions are universally technological upgrades from S-Vid era ones.
Audio output technology has been unchanged since the '80s meaning with a "modern" receiver you are literally paying $300 for a hole.
>>
So most of the arguments ITT have been about the first of OP's points, but I don't get the 2nd. So they give you backwards compatibility but you're complaining because it's the "wrong" kind of backwards compatibility? Sure, it uses software emulation so it's not perfect but the PS2 fat and PS3 fat had so many reliability issues caused by their hardware emulation.
>>
>>385874408
>Post S-Video televisions are universally technological upgrades from S-Vid era ones.
And digital audio outputs are universally technological upgrades from analog ones. The fact that OP is using technology that has been outdated since the 80s only adds to my point.

So far it's the ps4. Even though it had so much promise, I just had more fun myself with the ps3 and with friends on the 360. Hardly any of my friends got ps4 on top of that most of the games I liked of ps3 they stopped making or cancelled for ps4. And I am not into weeb shit except for gundam where I am not to thrilled for gundam verses but might do breaker 3 if I get all the details (how to make jap account for ps4, is it single player, how to get all the dlc)

All digital audio gets converted to analog before it goes to your speakers no matter what your setup, because unlike televisions speakers are no different than what they were in the '80s. So no, it's not the same thing.

I think this might be a decent place to ask.

Recently I got E73 on my Xbox 360. It's an Elite model, only happens when I plug in the HDMI. Everything I Google is saying I either need to reflow the southbidge where the ethernet connection is since it might be too much/not enough pressure or the solder came undone. Would I be better off just upgrading to an E/Slim rather than spending the $50 to fix this thing? Keep in mind I'd have to also buy the hard drive transfer kit to get all my data off which is another $50 on top of the $200 for a new 360.

Not OP but my PS3 was hooked up with HDMI to the TV and AV hooked up to my stereo with the Video wire just left dangling.
Now im not an audiophile so i didnt have surround sound or a nice stereo. I didnt use any optical cables or anything. It was a simple and cheap way of making Bad Company 2 and MGS4 sound better.

Im not excusing OPs mental handicap, im just saying that I did actually use both. Just for a ghetto stereo rig.

As long as the library is not concerned, I agree 100%. My phat PS2 died (Though I did play a ton of FFXI. I eventually moved on to PC)

Then got a slim that also died, and it got so hot that you could fry an egg on it.

Got the last slim to come out, and that one worked until I stopped using it due to have a BC PS3. (Somehow that thing still works like a charm)

NES. Try to run a game and it blinks repeatedly and blacks out. I know about the 72 pin connector, and I don't care. The system can't even handle having composite cables plugged in at all, fucking up the video quality, and the RF adapter sucks quality even worse.

I love the games, I hate the system.
