The thing about Mass Effect is that it started out as a TPS/RPG mashup with its roots in classic sci-fi, but as EA gained more influence over Bioware, that vision became increasingly more distorted.

Virtually all of the elements that made ME1 stand out were gone, replaced with an even greater focus on action. In ME3 there's nothing left of the Bioware that envisioned Mass Effect back in 2004-5. Adding to that, ME3 resolved the series' overarching plot very poorly, forgoing the 'choice and consequence' angle in favor of a Deus Ex Machina solution. So the choices players made in ME1 and 2 were rendered moot, which soured the experienced for many.

Problems with 2 come mostly from the shallowness of the story, there isn't really a story per se, more like a bunch of little chapters where we recruit a single party member, followed by a bunch of chapters where we help said party members with something to ensure their loyalty and then it endgame time.

ME3, contrary to popular belief, built on this and improved a lot upon it, one of the staples of the franchise was that your choices had an effect in later games, 3 is the one where they have the most effect, one example is how you can stop 2 alien races from going into a war that will end with one of them being extinct, and you could only get to do so if you followed a certain amount of steps in ME2, Otherwise, one entire race dies. And the story finally pays off, Hell, the story made me care for a party member I didn't even give a shit about before in Samara.

But the ending is where it drops the ball, and what has people raging. it doesn't make sense from a gameplay standpoint, it ignores established lore we've been following for 5 years at least, introduces a plot twist that is stupid as fuck and the ending is the same, you just pick a color, unlike what was promised as >>385850670 posted

Defeating the Dragon is something every character must do as the other alternative is the literal end of the world. Arguably the player should have gotten the opportunity to not fight against the Dragon and thus get a "bad end", but not including that option is not that detrimental.

Not to mention: in an RPG it's much more important how many choices you get to make throughout the game and how that affects your experience while playing the game rather than how many different endings you get.
