If they can't properly capture the emotions of the original game, then they shouldn't bother at all making this remake. The original was done with a lot of love and attention to sprites, if they just make it for the sake of having a 3D remake but scrape off all the faces you'd see on Cackletta, fawful, luigi and Mario and the rest, then why even bother?

And in all honesty, I'd play Mario&Luigi: Bowser's Minions if it was it own game entirely. There was so much potential for a standalone but i guess Myamoto doesn't give a shit

Actually try playing them. In Paper Jam regular enemies will take off like 1/3rd of your HP with difficult to avoid multi-part attacks. Whereas in Superstar Saga they hit like a regular RPG so like 1/10th of your HP and they're slow and easy to avoid.

Nintendo completely forgot about atmosphere and lighting in their later years.

64 Bowser had a model that matched the area he was in. It helped too add to the atmosphere; the platform was neon green and the skybox was purple and black clouds and since they couldn't rig the lighting to reflect those on Mario/Bowser, they changed Bowser's model entirely to fit the arena.

In the DS remake, and in the Zelda 3DS remakes, they threw all that shit out the window and presented it in a way that came off flat and bereft of mood.

Honestly, I wouldn't put SSS that high on a pedestal above the other games. It's good, but I'd say BiS and DT are just as good as it is, since all three have their flaws. Paper Jam and PiT are good too, but their flaws keep them from being as good as the other three.

It's an entire waterfall reaching the ground in the original game, but it's much more subdued in Bowser's Minions. The toads freaking out during the opening cutscene after Cackletta steals Peach's voice is another example of the artstyle being a lot less cartoony/exaggerated and thus being less interesting.
It's not that the art is horrible in Bowser's Minions, but it's just less interesting than the game it's remaking. As soon as SSSDX got leaked I was concerned about exactly this, that it might seem competent on its own but lackluster compared to the original game graphically.

Okay, you know what? No. If people prefer the way that the enemies were drawn or whatever in SSS, that's one thing, but anyone legitimately defending the actual spritework itself over some of the later games can fuck right off.

Just take a look at fucking Bowser in the original game. Both his battle and map sprites have these garish, oversaturated color palettes, not to mention they had to edit the latter for the JP release so that they didn't look as off-model. And for all the shitposting about art direction and faithfulness, the color schemes in Bowser's sprites don't remotely resemble his official art in SSS. His face/horns/spikes all share the same shade of orange as his arms and legs, and his eyes are red because who knows why. Hell, there's not even a good reason for this shit. The game was released after the SP, so plenty of players would have had backlights, and it's perfectly possible to work within the GBA's 16-color limit.

Here's what you can get by dicking around in Photoshop for a bit with a different color palette and some minor edits. Uses the exact same amount of colors. I'm sure an actual sprite artist could do far better, so there's no excuse.
