The behind Haseo and Sora is named Ryou Misaki, he's in highschool when .hack//G.U. takes place. He doesn't remember his time as Sora due to data drain shenanigans involving Morganna and Skeith. Basically Sora's character data is trapped in Skeith's staff for a while and Ryou's memories of being Sora are stuck in there with it.

Beyond that though yea, he was always a highly skilled jerkass within The World. Seeing him grow out of that over the 3 G.U. games is often mentioned as one of the primary appeals of the games themselves.

He was in 4th grade when he played Sora, so yea, thereabouts. The short version of the PKK stuff is that he made it to the end of an Event called the Forest of Pain and got supercharged levelwise. It's a lot easier said than done, given how The World is basically a virtual reality dream world that may be propped up by advanced AIs that do things that shouldn't be remotely possible.

I don't think it's another plane of existence, but more just the idea of controlling a virtual character using your consciousness, and questioning what consciousness is.

There's no real difference between the mind and real body and the mind and the virtual body. Watch Sign and listen to Bear. When you leave the game world and return to the real world, your character enters a state of limbo. When you leave the real world and go to the virtual world, your body enters a state of limbo.

He also talks about what happens to his character when he reset old RPGs after he lost. Yes, all the data is reset, but doesn't that character still exist somehow? Is it more than just a computer program running and being reset when you invest your heart and soul into it? What is the main difference between quitting the game and having your virtual character be lost, and losing your life and having your body be lost?

Both still 'exist' but you are lost.

How do you play that one that was japan only on PC? Is there a guide? I know a guy has the servers up but I don't know how to go about it.

Funnily enough, the online game Fragment let you do exactly this. However you still had to stand around for 30 seconds buffing yourself and your 2 party members, for each buff. Attack up, accuracy up, defense up is about a minute of casting spells.

How hard were these games? I remember never getting far because I was probably 8-10 or so when I played infection. I can't remember if I beat it or not but I have mutation as well and I know I haven't beaten that.
It seems like a fun RPG that I'd really enjoy these days, but I remember not being able to understand the world building/selection system. I think I was probably overwhelmed with the options.
This is definitely the wrong place to ask because it's biased but I'm curious if I was just too young and it was 2deep4me or what.

IMOQ felt a little more like you yourself was getting into these glitchy backend places you really weren't meant to go, and you're kind of flailing around with no direction or idea of what you've gotten yourself into.

GU is more like experiencing a character do these things with a lot of help from more knowledgeable players, guiding his way. It's far more cinematic than IMOQ was. It does still have a decent dose of not-supposed-to-be-there places though. Much more engaging gameplay too.

G.U. honestly looks like any modern non-AAA jrpg on the market. Most jrpgs are decades behind graphically, so it fits right in. IMOQ looks like a borderline N64 game outside of cutscenes though.
