The prbolem with visuals is that is the only shit they are pushing on now days. AI, physics, performance or shit that actually affects gameplay is set aside in favor for jsut fancy shadding, more detailed models in empty spaces or online.

Different studio, different people. If you compare the 360 version of Crysis and Far Cry 3, you won't be that far off. It's great but so much other engines are far easier to get into through modding or other means.
That's why every Bethesda RPG has a shit ton of mods.

I think the challenge for Valve making or releasing a Source successor is keeping the flexibility and moddability of Source while adding substantial features to make it compete in the modern AAA market.

You also need to keep in mind that both the quantity and quality of art assets that it takes to make a game look "acceptable" today have both increased by orders of magnitude over the last 20 years. You can't get away with throwing a 128x128 texture on 16 triangles and calling it a cliff wall anymore.

Even strictly graphically I feel more important things should have taken priority. Good lighting engines are 600000x more important than 4k textures. Denuvo DRM gave me a whole bunch of shit when I was trying to play MGSV on my laptop in college a few years ago. Ever since playing it my hard drive has run noticeably slower too, probably due to the shitty decryption methods denuvo uses. Plus, steam is already fucking DRM, don't layer two DRMs on one another it's a shitty thing to do, especially since denuvo has been cracked by pirates several times before and only serves to shit on paying customers.

Dosnt dip below 60 fps maxed on my 1070gtx, and most time holds above 100 fps.
The writing, i think its much worse. It reuses the world building of the original without expanding upon it, in fact it tries to pretend those 15 years that separate the games never happened and the world was frozen in time and political situation.
I think the game somewhat works if you play Corvo, but if you play Emily, the Empress of the isles, the most powerful person alive it makes completely no sense.
Dunno what by the game made me think of Wolf new order, a game where great writing is used to string together a set of levels and even manages to do it for Nazis on the fucking moon, while Dishonored fails to justify a single of its fucking levels in any way that dosnt seem completely nonsensical and contradictory.

I miss the times when you just had to install the game and play flawlessly.

Nowadays you have to download and install the game, start the game and immediatly notice things that are not ok like

- unwanted mouse acceleration (9 times on 10 you have to change some value in an *.ini file to disable this shit)

- forced v-sync that you can't disable (*.ini file again)

then when you're ready to start, after the intro and first CGI video you suddenly notice that you have low fps when your machine is supposed to destroy that game.

--> open google and search --> millions of threads and complaints about how the game was optimized like liquid shit --> wait X months so the game can get fixed (Forza Horizon 3 anyone?) --> notice how the new "optimization" of the game consisted in the Ultra graphic setting being lowered (console LOD, downgraded effects and textures).

Now at this point the autism kicks in because you don't accept this so you start to look for mods to improve the graphics and you spend X hours searching and installing shit so you can feel better.

Again, when you're ready you start playing until you find the next bug or performance issue that triggers another time your autism since you're not sure anymore if it's the game's fault or your pc has problems, like faulty hardware.

It's a disgrace.

I'm on the same boat, I just can't bring myself to finish either despite enjoying the good majority I've played of both, and I'm pretty close to finishing them too. At the risk of sounding like a massive faggot they just feel so souless and bland. The fact that they decided to double down on the retarded racism parallels that don't work in MD, which was already the worst thing about HR, doesn't really help my enthusiasm for it either.

In Dishonored's case I just can't bring myself to care about the setting or the villains, and I'm not too big on how much more black and white the lethal/non-lethal elimination options for the assassination targets are this time around are. All in all a lot of small issues that just sort of build up and make me not care for it as much.

let me quickly get philosophical about video games.

i feel like every thing i want a game to do can be done with ps2 era/6th gen tech, maybe 360/7th gen. anything beyond that is just bloat. the gta series is my prime example of this. san andreas is fully 3d to the point where it doesnt feel like a test like gta 3 or vice with its weird camera. it has a fully open world with no loads between islands. it has at least 20 hours of missions. graphics are fine for me, serviceable. i get the point that they are people, the cars looks like cars, and foliage is foliage. i think san andreas is less than 2 gigs for all of this. a few years later gta 4 is like 16 gigs for the added benefit of ragdoll physics, greatly improved character models with INDIVIDUAL FINGERS IN A GTA GAME HOLY SHIT, and far more detailed car destruction. i still remember using library wifi on my psp to look at gta 4 promos in awe a few years later gta 5 does the same stuff, slightly prettier, kinda worse everywhere else, and its near 80 gigs. are games reaching the tipping point? 5 didnt even bring anything new. im still entertained playing a game from fucking 2004 on its original hardware. i was even more mad to discover that the master chief collection is like 50 gigs for 4 full games, but halo 5 is 90 on its own. i dunno, i just feel like games should have used tech advancments to increase the number of things on screen or greater draw distances since it serves gameplay, rather than more detailed textures. i still think 6th gen beats out 7th gen for me cause thats when 3d games first got truly competent.

anyway, im all but done with games at this point. it feels like ive been playing the same 3 games since like 2008. vr and ar dont have enough promise. expect the industry to crash before the next console gen in 2020, if there even is one

Because they are usually done by people who don't understand simple concepts like good color theory, art direction, cohesive style, and a pile of other obvious things.

A lot of modders just like to slap on 4K "HD" textures which usually consist of the original texture badly upscaled with a few shitty photoshop filters run on it and expecting it to look good. Also many don't understand the law of diminishing returns, for example having a massive texture for a prop the size of an pack of cigs.

Further problems are modders who don't understand how to actually 3D model so you get these people who just port shit from other games or programs and do a few low effort changes and do a bad rig of the model and call it a day. After years in the Gmod community id say less than 15% of all modders are actual 3D modellers and not people who just use 3Dripper or just decompile existing models from other games and do model rigging without knowing how to fucking use blend weights correctly.

i played the beta when it was free and was free and got my fill. i played it every night. game was fun, bu i didnt have the money for it at the time. i put it off and when i checked on it in a few months the playerbase was dead. at least l4d has an offline and splitscreen mode.
