Its not a matter about genre of the game, its popularity, lots of people just play what's popular and there's definitely a good amount of people who stopped playing overwatch to start playing the new popular game that is pubg

Anecdotally, me and a group of friends all bought OW in launch week and racked up a couple hundred hours each already.

Competitive games that try too hard to be balanced bore me after two months. Same happened with SC2. Anyone who says PUBG is competitive is a complete retard, but the game isn't meant to be that despite their attempts to push for an esports scene.
>>
Overwatch's waning popularity has nothing to do with the new casual garbage shooter of the month - a game by Blizzard could have very strong legs if it was managed correctly.

Unfortunately, Overwatch is a pretty shell around a rotten core and Blizzard's track record demonstrates that they have no idea how to fix the fundamental issues with the game. Add the fact that management is undoubtedly pushing them to sell loot boxes instead of developing meaningful content and you get a game that is slowly dying.

I thought pubg was supposed to be THE battle royale game that would have a natural esports scene, yet there's little depth (maybe I'm wrong, haven't actually played it) and it doesn't capture what makes battle royale so good. This is just another shooter that will most likely get an unsuccessful forced esports money built on how much money the devs pump into it

>competitive pubg ever

There's no way to make pubg competitive unless you remove the rng element of the game (in the form of loot tables), because as it stands that's way too much of a factor in determining how long you survive, also luck just comes into play more often than not. If you just fuck around the map and actively avoid people you can usually rank pretty high. Would these people get to advance in the tournament? How would you even have a bracket system? Would you start with rounds of 100 players and the guy at the very top moves on? Would you just have one round and its winner take all?

Not to mention in its current form the game is still buggy as shit
>>
>>385821803
If TF2 could have some kind of parasitical bastard esports scene with fuck-all support from Valve, using a heavily modified ruleset that the game wasn't balanced for in the first place, then a phenomenon like PUBG could probably make something neat.

There's not really a lot of mechanical complexity, but it's like Counter-Strike, you don't need to know the wacky spray patterns or the frames or some fighting game shit to appreciate what's going on and it's generally fast-paced.

Plus it's popular with stream viewers.

Honestly, I could see it doing better than whatever money laundering scheme they're trying to pull with Overwatch League.
>>
>>385822345
I dont give a shit who is making it, esports just generally kills the fun as the game no longer can be about stupid fun and thus has to be "balanced" with every god damn patch cycle resulting in someone bitching about balance one way or the other.

Then of course the side effects on the community where every casual believes they are a pro for choosing the fucking meta pick even though those choices have no fucking effect on the game at the level 99% of the player base is playing at.
>>

CSGO has way less rng elements than PUBG because it has a set map pool and you buy your weapons. If everybody in CSGO started with nothing and then just ran around and somebody found an AWP while somebody else found a USP then yeah that would be rng.

Also nobody takes hearthstone seriously as an esport. Basically all the hearthstone tournaments are blizzard events because the game is like 80% luck and blizzard just props it up.

>>385820391

they're both ultra-casual shit that losers take seriously, same tone of game
>>
>>385822839
Well no thats not what I meant but I didn't explain myself well.

Its not necessarily balance so much as thats the only thing that is ever focused on from the devs when esports comes around. Rather than providing fun gameplay modes to offer variety, modding tools for the community, etc. The devs instead are more inclined to only balance around a small set of game modes because thats what brings in money from esports and ultimately the game gets stale as fuck as shit like LoL or OW when you compare them to something like TF2.

Focusing on esports so early in the games life is a huge fucking warning flag, esports scenes should develop from good game mechanics, not the devs specifically catering the game around it and offering nothing else but it to the player.
>>
>>385822660
How in the fuck is players using scout, soldier, demo, and medic with mostly the default weapons on valve made maps not what the game was balanced for? Have you even played 6v6?
>>
>>385823143

>>
>>385822410
>Hows that top 4 bracket looking this tournament? ...what, it looks almost exactly like the last 20 top 4 brackets?

How is that exactly bad?

Thats how it should be, the people with the most practice should be the best.
Just shows how high the skill ceiling in that game is so fresh blood catching up to their 20 years experience is basically impossible since they never stopped climbing in skill.

In a game like OW you have probably reached the skill ceiling half a year in.

But i guess its boring for the average fuckwit spectator if "le epic upsets" and random shit doesnt happen. Might just watch some drama show instead of competition then.
>>
>>385823143
Because it's /v/ and people here can't comprehend others liking something they don't.
PUBG is still quite shite though.
>>
8 minute queues in gold. Overwatch is fucking ruined, but I don't think it's PUBG. This has been developing longer than that.
>>
>>385820391
>Overwatch and PUBG are two totally different kinds of games
in gameplay, yes.
in audience, no. both games attract normie and casual scum like moths to fire.
>>
>>385822057
Because esports is a new thing that has evolved from competitive gaming.

Forcing esports doesn't make a good esport making a fun, competitive game will create a competitive scene, which if supported evolves into an esports scene.

Overwatch is unfun garbage, its merely waifu bait with esports plastered all over it.

I don't understand modern blizzard, they had one of the biggest esports scenes that evolved from a game they made 20 years ago, yet they don't seem to understand it, even worse, they've been forcing esports shit into every one of their games now-a-days, especially where esports shouldn't exist, like RNG card games, MMORPGs, ect.
>>
PUBG shows us why Twitch eceleb culture is bad for video games. There's a handful of pretty specific elements that appeal to underaged streamsloths and PUBG is the first game to truly cynically attempt to pull each of those strings. It's like a perfectly engineered "fun" turd and video game enthusiasts should be worried.
>>
Fucking FOTM gaming is the death of gaming.

Devs have no need to develop a full game with compelling story, art, animation, and gameplay when they only need to make some half assed shooter multiplayer game with no features to make hundreds of millions.
>>
>>385823473
>2 min queues in high diamond/ low masters

>>385823502

Blizzard fucked up with SC2 because they would go months without fixing balance issues that would ultimately make people stop playing. Also Starcraft has a problem inherently in that the learning curve is way way steeper than something like LoL or Hearthstone. Playing as a new player in Starcraft can be frustrating as hell because you need to have a certain level of mechanical skill down pat before you even think about strategy, because somebody more experienced or efficient in macro will just steamroll you every time.

I know seven people who bought OW are now playing PUBG. Seven at least, and given that I have another 5 or so on my steam list that aren't on my bnet list, there's probably more.
>>
>>385823714
So we should make games easier to get into with lower skillceilings so new people get in, so spectators are happy?

Instead of you know, exactly doing what makes players happy?

Fuck that spectator pleasing bullshit, not every game needs to be spectator friendly, this trend is already ruining every single current competitive game.
>>
>>385824175
This. Capcom is doing this shit to sf5 to the point where the top players fucking hate the game but play it only cause its all they have. The game only rewards rushdown and what little defensive options you have are inconsistent and gimmicky. They fucking
HATE the game.
>>
lets see, for all the faults that PUBG has it's still far more skill and decision based than Overwatch. There's alot more variables going on in a PUBG match than the same, what, 6 maps on OW? While OW also being incredibly META driven because Blizzard can't balance a fucking game if their life depended on it. Overwatch fucked up by oversimplifying everything - no need to watch ammo or resources, just shoot as much as you like. There's no strategy involved and hardly any real skill compared to traditional FPS, PUBG draws more on that and that's why it's going to beat out OW.

You'd think /v/ would be happy that a small literally who battle royale game is about to topple nu-Blizz's SJW shitfest, but I guess it's the contrarian "can't like anything cuz it's popular" attitude overrules everything else. I'm not even pro PUBG, I'm just glad to see Overwatch getting fucked.
