Rom is doing incomprehensible things, possibly even to herself. She serves as a door, keeping the other worldly things at bay from our world. Or at least that was the intent. It seems more that she only hid them from the eyes of all but the most enlightened people.
I felt like Rom was made after they tried something, not necessarily the events that happen during your game.
Because Rom was somehow hiding the overlaps, but unable to prevent it from occurring.
That was probably a long time ago, and before people had enough understanding to conduct the kind of rituals that happen in Yahar'gul. The note about the mensis ritual tells us that in yahargul the citizens were killed in a ritual, you can see many corpses melted with the walls in yahargul. They probably created the one reborn. Its not really that particular mode of information delivery that would make it complex, rather the actual writing itself. I think the main reason people pat the souls games on the back for this type of storytelling is because we are abundantly aware of how limited games are when it comes to fleshing out someone's writing. Fromsoft puts this to the side and refuses to let plot or story compromise the gamelay.

So if you hear someone crowing on about how fucking great it is that the game leaves exposition for optional text in item descriptions, they are most likely just grateful to not have their experience cut up by excessive cut scenes.

The messengers form the head of the Winter Lantern, and are located on the bottom of those Nyarlthotep looking things in the swamps of the Nightmare. Which makes no fucking sense in either regard.
As Messengers they seem to be just what they are, small go-betweens for the Moon Presence in order to communicate with our world. The Doll seems to be familiar with them and trust them, which suggests she is also in service to the Moon Presence, and her plan was for you to get the ending where you wake up, or where you replace Gehrman, and that when she seems to chide you "Oh, Good Hunter" she's actually amused and almost not surprised at what you've accomplished.
