Inflation got insane during WoD. WoW literally gave free gold from garrisons. Very few people have the know how to play the AH to make retarded amounts of gold, but WoD basically removed any need to make gold or even spend it when garrisons provided everything you needed.

My casual friends who were broke all the time, but leveled alts constantly, would just have 10-20 under 1 realm, potentially 40 characters if you just make them under 1 linked realm group, to just send them on missions daily, maximizing gold gain on followers and making millions of gold a week functionally doing nothing.
