This is a bit of a long shot but I can see them including some kind of conquest mode in addition to campaign mode. Is place of Zelda's adventure mode or whatever it was called.

Basically I can imagine a map, you start by controlling one point, enemy controls the rest, you take over battlefields one by one until you have them all, maybe some other things to manage if you're lucky.

Since this wouldn't be as heavily story based as a campaign it would allow for permadeath of characters until the current game ends. Maybe this mode has a separate levelling system too, somewhat accelerated compared to normal.

Yes there is.
Characters can talk bewteen each others creating bonds during battle, improving their relationship and efficiency in battle.

The principle is very good, but can also be very limited.
Some support conversations don't go farther than "Ho god I fucking love salads", "Wow me too!", and it barely explore the personnality of the characters for some of them.

By consequent, people have a tendency to create their "own" supports conversation to try to complete them, like mini fanfics, and the fandom is eating that kind of stuff like hotcakes.
To me, it's that kind of stuff that made FE so popular.

The previous FE also had this, but the latest episode has a very good character design, so it's easy to attract anyone.
