Call of Pripyat is the easiest to get into, but Shadow of Chernobyl is arguably the best one.

The first game is rough though, and for sure do something to get rid of the head bobbing and be sure to play on the hardest difficulty as it reduces headshot RNG for you.

theres a console command to disable headbobbing and you should also find the one that disables mouse accel/lag or whatever

Pro tip from a seasoned stalkan: if you can't get to the artifact because it spawned in the middle of deadly anomaly - shoot it. Artifacts as well as any other item in the game have physical models and can be moved by shooting them.
Another tip: Sidorovich is an asshole.

It's because difficulty settings in stalker are so weird, they change bullet ballistics, gun accuracy and damage for ALL guns in the game including yours. On easier settings enemies are harder to hit and it takes more bullets to kill them. It is fucking weird, but that's the only reason people will always recommend playing on Master difficulty.

I've played through vanilla Shadow of Chernobyl on master twice, just finished the second run earlier today. I really think that's the way to do it.

some tips.
1. This is an older style pc game built on quicksaves. Deaths are quick on any difficulty, just get in the habit of quicksaving and you'll appreciate the high gun damage on master. The moment you figure out that most enemies can't hit you when you're leaning, you're golden.

2.The start of the game when you're stuck with a soviet super soaker is the fucking worst, don't take it as a good representation of the rest of the game. Literally any assault rifle aims and feels way better than the piddly nothing pistols and sawed-offs you start off with. Once you hit the first military checkpoint and get yourself a viper SMG, you'll start to feel it.

3.stealth in this game is busted and will always be busted. Don't worry about it. Just stay in cover and take your time shooting straight and there'll be soviet red all over the floor before you know it.

4.Don't bother with optional side missions, The game pours money all over you on its own with how easy it is to find artifacts, and you can easily get by just on what you find off of carcasses. Stick to the main path and there'll be plenty of slavs to shoot.

5.some of the default key binds are weird, change them to something more standard if you need to. Setting crouch to toggle is a big help.

6.There are RPG elements but it's not an RPG. Killing everything that moves and hoarding all the guns you find doesn't really pay off. Travel light so you can sprint, there's no fast travel and you've got some walking to do.

Do not under any circumptances play an unpatched game, the bugs and crashes will be constant.

SHITTER in particular has the best fps mechanic in the world, the one that every level designer unanimously decided was complete dogshit when the genre was first created: darkness! fortunately you have an ANTIDARKNESS button

I felt STALKER was more about the weird setting and atmosphere than about pretending I'm in the military. The game doesn't really try to appeal to the type of person who wants to play a realistic military sim. If anything the russian military are depicted as imperialistic and greedy, and the game is about working as an independent treasure hunter in an anarchist region. It only makes sense that people in that type of environment would happen to carry assault rifles.

I mean I'd prefer something akin to Quake if it was built around multiplayer, but STALKER kinda does its own thing with its busted-ass slav lore and low budget horror elements and I like it for that.

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.

Nigga I got way over 500 across three base games, modded games and CoC. Misery has good idea behind it and some aspects are nailed, but overall it's not really great. RNG rape times tedious and savescumming if you don't go for permadrath.
It's very good for revisiting the game after a few years though

Install only the mods that fix the bugs. There's a /vg/ pastbein site with all the needed mods. The only one that you really need is the one that fixes the bugs. Also if youre playing the third one you dont need shit the game is perfect and runs great, enjoy your time... stalker.
