even as a fan of his voice acting in MGS1/MGS2, I actually think him going behind kojima's back and talking konami into letting him voice big boss was probably the biggest cry baby move ever. Also he started a political blog a couple years ago and it's fucking obnoxious, even if you agree this him ideologically he's just a fucking asshole about everything.

Can someone give me a quick rundown on this guy? What happened with him?

It was dumb to replace him so late in the franchise. Kojima is a dumb westaboo who just wanted a BIG STAR so he got Kiefer Sutherland. Then he watched Fury Road and decided Snake needed to be essentially a silent protagonist, making hiring Kiefer entirely pointless. If Kojima had a problem with Hayer's voice then he should have gotten the voice director to actually direct properly. It's clear Hayter can still do the regular Snake voice, he just thought he needed to put on an extra layer of gravel for some reason.

If you're a retard who obsesses over dumb twitter screencaps then you could maybe argue Hayter was "too whiny", but if you care about things that actually matter like game development, Kojima was entirely in the wrong.

Nope, he got replaced because he wanted loads of money and had no experience in non voiced acting performance. He is just a writer with a good voice.

It's still really shitty that they didn't let him return for the real Big Boss in MGSV. I get that it would have been spoiled by Ishmael, but they could have reworked the opening to make it work. Ishmael is literally in the game for five minutes, they could have had Hayter come in for a day and record lines. They could just say in the game that Ground Zeroes was Venom's memory of the mission or something.

Also can we all agree that the best fit for Big Boss' voice is:

David Hayter: Young Big Boss
Kiefer Sutherland: Venom Snake
Richard Doyle: Elderly Big Boss
HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER:
Kurt Russel as Old Big Boss in a MG/MG2 remake (final boss in MG1 would be voiced by Kiefer Sutherland)

The problem is that Hayter has reprised Snek so many times that he would actually have been paid more as per SAG-AFTRA union rules than a genuine screen actor like Kiefr,
So Konami gave the okay to replace him because the English version isn't worth that much money. Akio Otsuka is Snake's real voice and always will be.
