That's a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Xbox brand was. It was never about the console. Those were always made and sold at a loss. It was never about the games either. Microsoft makes a lion's share of profits off of how much they charge devs for updates, what they take away from the Windows Store, subscription fees, and the data they sell the minute you boot up any copy of Windows from 7 to 10. Whether it's Xbox or Windows 10, they're making money off of everything but games. Anything that's Microsoft exclusive that makes its way to other platforms is what wasn't making them enough money in the first place, and they usually contain enough microtransactions or otherwise to still get a trickling amount of cash sent in anyway.

Plus asking a company to put things on Steam is just asking for a different colored dick up your ass. You're selling yourself to the botnet either way.

with consoles, you got a single fixed hardware configuration. easy enough to code a firmware update for. with a PC, you're gonna get plenty of differing hardwares, running a dual to hexa core intel/AMD CPUs, paired with GPUs ranging from low to high tier with differing specs, some in SLI/CF, & RAM ranging in quantity and speed. I can't blame anyone if that's a pain to code an update for, that we may as well stick with what we have now with PC gaming.

and of course, we also have to mention how it'll affect MS relationship with Valve, and whether it'll be successful or not. not a whole lot of selling point when the games are also available on Steam, the the go-to site for online distribution on PC for years.
